The End From Bar Rescue Has Moved Locations

The End in Las Vegas, Nevada, which was made over by Bar Rescue has moved locations from 3550 S. Decatur Blvd. to 4821 Spring Mountain Rd.  The move was not very far, as it is pretty much in the same shopping center.

Left - The End after Bar Rescue makeover; Right - The End location after moving

Many people commenting on the original update thought the location had closed, judging by the picture above.  Also, the bar stopped updating their Facebook page in December and the phone number was disconnected when I called. However, they are now updating their Facebook page and operating at their new location.  The bar is still going by the name The End and is using the logo provided by Bar Rescue.  Here are some photos at a recent party there, but it is hard to get a good look at the interior - Album 1, Album 2.

Here is the distance from the original location to the new location if you are interested:

I just wanted to get this update up before the next season of Bar Rescue starts tomorrow.  Look for updates on here for all of the new episodes.  I have updated the Bar Rescue Update page to show that this bar has moved.

Bar Rescue - Sorties Tavern (O'Banion's) Update

Tonight on the season premiere of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Bellevue, Nebraska to try to rescue O'Banion's Bar.  This is the first of three bars this season that were filmed near Omaha, Nebraska.  O'Banion's has three owners, and one of the owners is a heavy drinker who is acting obnoxious in the bar.  The other co-owners do a hostile takeover of the bar and make the heavy drinking owner go home.  During the Bar Rescue makeover, O'Banion's was renamed Sorties Tavern, and is an Air Force themed bar.

Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates of Sorties since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar.

Positive Reviews:
  • "Clean and friendly bar near Offutt AFB.  Has one pool table and a dartboard. They have about a dozen beers on tap with a full bar. ATM located on site and they take debit/credit cards.  They have several craft beers available along with Guinness."
  • "The new bar looks good."
  • "Not O'Banion's anymore, now called Sorties. Same great service"

Negative Reviews:

  • "Went to the bar rescue unveil waited four hours to get in then waited one hour for the bartenders to ignore me. What a crappy place to eat and drink. I really hope the place goes under"
  • "I think bar rescue was here... They should come back for a do over."
  • "Asked bartender what whiskey cocktails they have since it says "whiskey cocktails" on front window. Bartender says "I don't know" and looks at all the clear liquor in the wells."
  • "I would not ever recommend that anyone go there.  I was so dissapointed.  I met 2 of the owners, one was very nice and one was so rude I will NEVER go back there. I asked him if he would fill my water while he was behind the bar and he said NO apparently he feels he is to good to serve the new customers that are coming there.  As a person works daily in customer service I was insulted by his arrogance. I had to wait over 20 minutes to get any service.  There were only 6 people in the bar at the time. Its not like they were busy and they had 2 bartenders and 2 owners there at the time. John Taffer, you might want to come back and give them another dose of reality. No wonder they called Bar Rescue, however, because of the main owner, they will not succeed!!!"
  • "Been to this place.. supported this place for 10 years, staff is great, experience tonight with the owner has solidified that I will never entertain going to this venue. Jerry, the owner, is completely out of control, still a drunk at his own place and has zero concept of professionalism. "

Reviews from Urbanspoon, Foursquare, Yelp, Sorties Facebook

Other and News and Links:
  • There are 5 preview videos for this episode on the Spike TV website, and it looks like they are playing up the owner Jerry being a loud and drunk owner.
  • Here is the Sorties Tavern Facebook Page, and Jerry is in some pictures on the page.  You will see the Air Force theme of the bar that Jon decided to do due to the close proximity of an Air Force Base.
    Photo - Facebook
  • Speaking of Jerry, here is his Facebook page, where he has been counting down to the episode.  He is also building a new "estate," so the bar must not have been struggling too much. Here are co-owner Dave and Steve's Facebook pages.  When Steve shared the video preview, someone commented "Funny as hell! Jerry is a great actor! Reality TV is such a hoot!!!!"
  • Jerry is speaking at the Nightclub & Bar Convention & Trade show in Las Vegas (Jon Taffer is President) at a "Bar Rescue - Where are they now?"event.  His bio says, "Jerry Dalrymple is the owner of Sorties Tavern in Bellevue, Nebraska.  Besides the Tavern Jerry manages his family’s real estate rental firm as well as he is an auto racing instructor. When he is not teaching auto racing he races cars throughout the country to advertise for his sponsors. Jerry grew up as a Military brat traveling all over the United States with his family watching his dad serve in the United States Air Force.  They finally settle down in Bellevue, Nebraska at Offutt Air Force Base.  Jerry graduated with a Bachelors degree in Business Management and Marketing. He entered the service industry as a Security Guard at the Gold Coast Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. When he returned back to Nebraska he wanted to have a place that would give the military service men & women a place to relax and have fun.  He bought a dilapidated bar by Offutt Air Force Base’s military housing in 2005. Over the years he has struggled to fix it up and turn it around. After bar rescue stepped in after many years of struggling he has been providing a place for the active military and Veterans to come and relax ever since called Sorties Tavern."
  • A website Hit That Dive was at some of the makeover of Sorties (and the upcoming ones in Omaha), and witnessed the reveal.  They said Bar Rescue filmed the reveal multiple times with the staff running up to the door.  Someone from the website also said,"I was also in line behind some friends of the owner who said the owner wasn't hurting for money at all, and all he wanted was the makeover to get new stuff in his bar and the publicity. I also happened to talk to the owner's daughter at the nearby pizzeria while waiting in line for the bathroom, and she said it was a "stressful" week for her dad. She then explained that owning the bar is just a hobby of his, and he has a real job outside of it. She even told me he was out of town for a day or two this week, so he wasn't even around the whole time for filming."

Conclusion:

The episode tonight will definitely play up the fact that Jerry is a drunk owner that is ruining the bar.  While he may be obnoxious, as with much of reality TV, it will be taken up a notch for the benefit of the show and cameras.  Judging by some of the negative reviews, Jerry seems to still be causing some issues at the bar, especially with new customers.

It doesn't seem like the bar owners were struggling that badly judging by the quote that the bar is pretty much a hobby for them.  Also, while Jerry will be heavily criticized tonight, Jon Taffer thought enough of him to invite him to speak at his convention in Las Vegas for a "Bar Rescue - Where are they now?" event.

UPDATE 3/13/2014 - The owner Jerry did an interview with Omaha.com, where he said Bar Rescue changed the order of a few things on the show.  He also said Bar Rescue"got all of these original bar stools from a local furniture place and they're meant for in-home use. So, to tell you the truth, they all ended up in the Dumpster, they all fell apart. We had to get new stools from a real bar place. You've got to do a lot of the things after they finished. They didn't do anything behind the bar or in the back or in the bathrooms."

UPDATE - Jerry describes the experience on the show with doing multiple takes for some scenes and getting encouragement from directors to yell with a little more urgency.  He also was drinking water when the show claimed he was drinking tequila. They are still happy with the makeover and definitely think it was worth it. (Link

They also are not currently serving food at the bar, and Jerry said "We had Nick Liberato, the chef, (teach) us how to make all that stuff. Well, they didn't really leave us any direction on where to get all the supplies. And then we have to learn how to make the stuff. He gave us some direction, but he didn't leave us recipes, so we had to relearn how to make it as well as our food license as well as find a food supplier ... we don't even have a cook"

Bar Rescue had that 100% increase in food sales in their update at the end of the show.....

Bar Rescue - Johnson County Line (KC's Bar) Update

$

0
On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Merriam, Kansas to try to rescue KC's Neighborhood Bar & Grill.  KC's has drunk owners, bartenders who do not care, and a raccoon that makes an appearance in the bar.  During the Bar Rescue makeover, KC's Neighborhood Bar & Grill  was renamed Johnson County Line Bar, which is the county in Kansas the bar resides in.  That name did not stick long, as they still go by KC's bar.

Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates of KC's Bar since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar.

Reviews:
There have not been any reviews of KC's bar since Bar Rescue did the makeover, but there is plenty of info below.

Other News and Links:
Photo - Facebook
  • KC's is a membership only bar that allows smoking inside of the bar.  Here is their website, and the membership is only $10 per year (membership info).  That is the lowest allowable membership fee by law, and here are the membership terms.
  • Here are 2 video previews of the episode that show a raccoon in the bar and someone chewing a mozzarella stick for supposedly a minute.  I highly doubt she chewed that bite for a minute straight.
  • Here is the KC's Bar Facebook page and the Bar Rescue makeover happened in October.
  • During the Bar Rescue makeover, the show made them enforce a dress code of no hats, no jeans, no cutoffs, no colors.  This angered many of the regulars and they all hated the new name and feel of the place.  Here are 145 comments worth of people complaining on their Facebook page, and here are another 69 comments complaining about the no jeans.
  • In those comments, bartenders respond to some of the comments and pretty much say that they had no control over anything and that it would be back to the normal KC's soon.  It seems like the new name Johnson County Line bar was changed back to KC's bar pretty much after Bar Rescue left.
  • Here are some photos (one is to the right) from June 2013 of bartenders and patrons at KC's Bar holding a friendly raccoon in the bar.  Perhaps someone has a pet raccoon and the footage was a setup?  Or maybe they have just had a raccoon problem for a while.
  • Here are the Facebook pages of the owner Bill, and the bartender Shawna.  From them, a picture from the makeover with Jon Taffer and others in raccoon hats:

Conclusion:

It sounds like the owners and regulars at KC's bar did not like the drastic makeover done by Bar Rescue and have gone back to the old name.  They are still a membership only bar that allows smoking.

It also sounds like there was some manufactured drama as is usually the case with reality TV.  This season may be more about Jon Taffer sound bites and other ridiculousness rather than the saving the bars.

Photo - Spike TV
Just two episodes into this season, Spike TV has already renewed Bar Rescue for another season and has ordered an additional 20 episodes.  The new season will begin sometime in the fall and the network decided to renew it because of the great ratings it brings.

Spike TV is officially calling the current season the 3rd season, so the additional 20 episodes will be the 4th season.  I'm not sure why they are considering these new episodes as the third season, meaning the third season has 40 episodes in it.  The update page on this site has the episodes broken up a bit different, but I will keep it as it is for now.

As always, come here to see the updates on how the bars are doing and the drama that comes with each episode.  There is information here that you will not know from watching the episodes and many times people from the episodes end up posting in the comments.

Here is the official press release from Spike TV:

"Spike TV Orders Fourth Season of “Bar Rescue”

SPIKE TV ORDERS A FOURTH SEASON OF “BAR RESCUE”
Network Greenlights 20 More Episodes of Network’s Highly Rated Series
 Starring Jon Taffer

New York, NY, March 21, 2014– Spike TV has greenlit 20 more episodes of the network’s popular original series, “Bar Rescue” starring renowned bar and nightlife expert Jon Taffer.  From the producers of ABC’s “Extreme Weight Loss” and Syfy’s “Opposite Worlds,” the series follows Taffer as he utilizes his nearly three decades of experience in the restaurant, bar and nightclub business to help give failing establishments one last chance to transform themselves into profitable businesses.
The new season will debut on Spike TV this fall.

“Bar Rescue” is among Spike TV’s original series that have successfully managed to broaden the network’s audience base. A new batch of original episodes (part of season three) kicked off on Sunday, March 9 at 9:00pm ET/PT, and have averaged 1.8 million viewers and improved the timeslot by a staggering +173% with Adults 18-49 and +131% with total viewers.

In “Bar Rescue,” Taffer travels nationwide, targeting a different failing establishment in each episode.  His approach may ruffle feathers along the way, but Taffer pulls no punches and values bottom lines above hurt feelings.  Owners and employees he believes are standing in the way of success are urged to check their egos at the door while he employs a proven scientific approach to solving the problems befalling bars.

“Bar Rescue” is produced by Eyeworks USA and Executive Producers JD Roth, Todd A. Nelson, DJ Nurre, Tim Warren and Jon Taffer.

Sharon Levy is Spike TV’s Executive Vice President, Original Series, Chris Rantamaki is Senior Vice President of Original Series for Spike TV, and Justin Lacob, Vice President of Original Series, serves as the network’s Executive in Charge of Production.

Taffer will also be featured in the new Spike TV series, “Hungry Investors,” premiering in May. With Eyeworks USA producing, Taffer teams up with acclaimed celebrity chef and author John Besh and “Top Chef All-Star” Tiffany Derry, to seek out “diamonds in the rough” — establishments that are struggling, despite having amazing potential to succeed.

Bar Rescue - O'Face Bar Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Council Bluffs, Iowa to try to rescue the O'Face Bar.  This is the second of three Omaha area Bar Rescue's that will air this season.  The episode is called "Punch-Drunk and Trailer-Trashed" and says that Jon tries to help a feuding and dysfunctional family.  If you follow Jon Taffer, Bar Rescue, or Spike TV on social media, you already know they are hyping this up as an episode where Jon Taffer walks out on the bar.  And the hype is real as he does end up walking out on this bar, meaning no name change or anything.

Let's take a look at some information, updates and drama behind the O'Face Bar Rescue makeover and see what made Jon Taffer walk out on them.

News and Links:
  • There are 2 videos on the Spike TV site that preview this episode and show the fighting, etc.
  • Council Bluffs is referred to by some as "Council Tucky."  The Urban Dictionary definition is here, which says things like: "nickname for the town across the river from Omaha perceived to be like the backwoods country of Kentucky,""a town with its fair share of strip joints, pickup trucks, and mullet hair cuts." and "the “white trash” area of the Omaha metro."
  • Side note - MTV's Teen Mom turned porn star Farrah Abraham is from Council Bluffs, IA.
  • The Google street view of O'Face is to the right. It looks pretty much like a trailer, and the kids riding bikes and tricycles is a nice addition.
  • Here is the O'Face Facebook Page, and they now have an "As Seen On Bar Rescue" picture on their page.  On Nov. 20th they posted, "We open tonight at 7:30 for the stress test. Hope to see everyone there." and on Nov. 22nd they posted"We will be open tonight at 8pm. It will be a normal night. Everything has been delayed. Thanks for bearing with us during this time. We cannot discuss at this time what is going on. See everyone tonight."
  • Here is the O'Face website that has their daily specials.
  • Here is the O'Face application for a liquor license, which has info such as Matt has plead guilty to "operating persay", which I think he meant per se and is basically a DUI.  They bought the bar from a place called O'Briens for $75,000. The terms were $7,000 down, $7,000 when liquor license is approved, and then $1,600 monthly payments until it was paid off.  The sale included all stock and fixtures. (Edit - The O'Briens bar is actually ANOTHER bar owned by Matt and Karen in Omaha, NE).
  • O'Face got in trouble with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Commission last year for serving an "alcoholic beverage or beer to someone who was intoxicated at the time." (Link to document)

  • Here are the owners Matt and Karen's Facebook pages, which are private.
  • Amanda is still at O'Face despite Jon wanting her fired, and her Facebook page lists her as "GM, Bartender, DJ at O'Face."  She had a status update a few weeks ago that said, "Watching bar rescue makes me sick to my stomach."  There was also a picture captioned"My sisters imitation of me when I'm drunk and wanting to fight lmao."  So apparently her fighting is common.
  • Here is the Facebook page for another bartender from tonight's episode named Dave.  According to comments on his page, he apparently gets slapped by fellow employees.  He also has a status update around the time of Bar Rescue leaving that says, "This is for all u nieve n shallow no life gossiping fb freaks. U dont know anything really about bar rescue at oface except they were there it was a closed set only people that do know are the employes n casting crew.so u all need to stop assuming and posting ur idiocrecy posts.caus when u assume u make an ass out of me n u. So stop hating on my bar and our staff cause u dont know."
  • UPDATE - Here is Cerisa's Facebook page, and she is friends with Amanda.  They were both commenting on the preview of the episode here, saying Cerisa "played the victim well."
  • There are photos of Amanda and Dave doing flaming shots, so look for that to be on the episode tonight, which will make Taffer angry.

The blog Hit That Dive was there during a day of the Bar Rescue filming for O'Face, and has some good details.  The person there said it was quiet and he was getting good service and actually enjoying himself at the bar.  The music was off and the lights were up in the bar, which was an indication they were filming.  Then out of nowhere the owner starts ringing a bell and yelling over the loud speaker, followed up by the music coming on and a girl dancing on top of the bar.

After this, a fight broke out between a female bartender and someone else, and they went outside to settle it (this was in the preview).  Jon Taffer then came out of nowhere to break up the fight.  Meanwhile everyone in the bar was blocked from going outside and were told to stay in the bar (that wouldn't look good on camera and Taffer couldn't do his thing).  After the fight, the bickering continued inside the bar and eventually the cops showed up to remove the bartender.

Conclusion:

Look for a lot of drama on tonight's episode with bartenders, bar owners, and employees fighting, being drunk, and not caring.  As stated before, it seems like Bar Rescue is moving more towards trying to find bars where there will be tons of drama (and possibly manufacturing some drama) this season and the show is less about the rescue.  They just got renewed for another 20 episodes, so it appears to be working.

It was only a matter of time before Jon Taffer walked out on a bar, as he is always threatening it.  You saw all of the press and publicity Gordon Ramsay and Kitchen Nightmares got when he walked out on Amy's Baking Company last year, so you would assume other makeover shows would follow.

Jon Taffer loves the attention and drama and has been building this up with a #TafferWalks hashtag on Twitter, and saying he can't wait to see people's reactions to him walking out.  I am also interesting in seeing the comments on this site after the show, as people from the show usually end up commenting.

Bar Rescue - Agave Junction Cantina (Scoreboard 2) Update

$
0
0
On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Norwalk, California to try to rescue the Scoreboard 2 Sports Bar.  The bar is suffering from ownership issues as well as an undertrained staff.  When Jon gets to the bar, he finds a filthy kitchen, bugs in the bar and liquor, as well as expired margarita mix.  He threatens to walk out again if the kitchen is not cleaned by the time he arrives the second day.  He doesn't walk out, and during the Bar Rescue makeover, the Scoreboard 2 Sports Bar was renamed Agave Junction Cantina.

Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Agave Junction Cantina since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar.

Reviews:

The only reviews were on their Facebook page, which of course are positive:
  • "I love the staff! Great food and drinks. I love the decor! This is an AWESOME spot! You'll catch me here for sure ;)"
  • "Local bar good music full bar good people and lots if Tv's HD PURO DON JULIO pool table lottery tickets ATM draft beer love love love"
  • "FRIENDLY STAFF THE DRINKS ARE GOOD AND THE FOOD IS YUMMY"
  • "Amazing! Speechless!"

Other News and Links:
  • Spike TV has 2 videos on their website that preview this episode.
  • Maria Menounos and her fiance Keven Undergaro are the two people that go undercover on the first day at the bar.  Of course the exact drinks they ordered each were the culprits of some drama.  Kevin ordered a whiskey cola - the whiskey had bugs in it, and Maria a strawberry margarita - the margarita mix was expired from 2012.  Supposedly Adam Carolla will be on this episode as well according to the episode description.
  • Jon Taffer showed up in Maria Menounos'"Christmas Dance Wars"video in December, which was when this episode of Bar Rescue was filmed.
  • As the name was Scoreboard 2, I'm not sure where the first one is.  There was a Scoreboard Sports Grill in Pomona, CA (30 miles away) that closed in 2009, so maybe that was it.
  • Scoreboard 2 was a finalist and finished in the top 5 for "Best Sports Bar" on the Los Angeles hotlist (Link)
  • The reviews before the Bar Rescue visit weren't that bad and one even said "the place can get pretty crowded."  There was also a stripper pole on the bar in 2012.

  • Here is the Agave Junction Cantina Facebook Page, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Here is the Agave Junction website and menu that specializes in tequila drinks and has 2 cocktails named after Adam Carolla.
  • Here is the Scoreboard 2 Facebook page, which is still active but all posts are about Agave Junction.
    Photo - Facebook
  • On this post on their Facebook page, chef Anthony Lamas (who will be on this episode, and was recently on an episode of Beat Bobby Flay on the Food Network) said he hoped the menu was working out for them.  Agave Junction responded "Chef Anthony, The menu is PHENOMENAL!!! Our food sales have never been better!"
  • Here is a Facebook post right after the makeover that has many of the employees tagged if you are interested.
  • Agave Junction Cantina was closed for a little bit after the Bar Rescue makeover because they had a lot of training to do before they were ready to reopen.  Only 4 employees on their staff were a part of the makeover. (Link)

Conclusion:

It sounds like everything is going well for Agave Junction Cantina and they have kept their new name and menu.  It didn't seem like the bar was too bad before the makeover with people saying it gets crowded and it also being in the top 5 for "Best Sports Bar" on a website.  Agave Junction Cantina has also said their food sales have never been better and they are having a Bar Rescue watch party at the bar, so they have to be happy with the makeover.  Maybe the show wanted to have a more successful makeover airing after last weeks debacle at O'Face.

The Bar Rescue O'Face Fight Video - Where Did It Come From?

$
0
0
On a recent episode of Bar Rescue at O'Face Bar in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Jon Taffer decided to walk out on the bar and not do the rescue.  The breaking point was a video that Jon obtained of the owner Matt slapping one of his bartenders named Dave in the face, which was saved until the end of the episode.  This had many people wondering where Jon got the video and did he have the video all along?

First, lets look at what Jon Taffer had to say about the video:
  • A fan recently asked Jon Taffer on Twitter: "how did you get the o’face bar footage of the fights at the end? Seemed really staged and fake"
  • To which Jon responded: "Nothing is staged of faked on the show. That video came from someone who will remain unnamed."

So, Jon is going with an unnamed source for how they obtained the video.

Hit That Dive from Omaha was at the bar when the episode aired and followed up with a few interviews of the bar's employees.
  • I asked him to find out where Jon Taffer got the video of the slap.
  • He later tweeted: "The "fight" between #ofacebar owner and his employee Dave was from their audition tape when #BarRescue wanted "MORE DRAMA". #Fake"
  • Steve from Hit That Dive also commented on the original O'Face post regarding Matt slapping Dave, stating:  "I just got this from Amanda..."Steve that was a clip from our audition tape when they wanted "more drama". AKA...staged."

Hit That Dive is saying that through talking with employees, the video was from their audition tape for Bar Rescue.

Finally, Dave, who is the bartender on the episode that got slapped by Matt has responded to multiple people about it on his Facebook page, and here are some of his comments:
  • Comment 1 - "We were all drunk for the show & that was our viewing for john taff to decide if he wanted to come or not the producers pushed us to have drama to influnce john to come . So really im gonna let someone slap me n not do nothing ha ha u know better. Thx mike ur good people also"
  • Comment 2 about him not fighting back "Omg 4 real if you dont think 4 once i would not come back with a right hook if ever slapped? Come on 4 real"
  • Comment 3 saying the fight was for show  - "Wow mike u have no reason to say that bout my boss didnt u read my post it was for show & he would never do that & mike if it did i can handle my own so no reason to have attitude towards him.
  • The owner Karen even weighed in saying, "What part don't people get that the fight wasn't real"
Dave said the producers pushed them to have drama so Jon would choose their bar to be rescued, and that the fight was not real

So that leaves everyone to form their own opinion on where the video came from and if it was real/fake.

Here is mine.  When Bar Rescue comes to a city, they tell multiple bars they are under consideration and that Jon will be coming to 1 of the 3 bars (see question 3 in this link).  This probably encourages the bars to do things that they think will make for good TV in hopes of getting picked over the other bars.  Producers probably told this to O'Face, so they decided to stage not 1, but 2 fights in hopes of getting a free makeover.  This also lets Jon Taffer claim that nothing is scripted as they do not tell people what to do, but let them know they need to be interesting to be picked.

The camera quality and sound quality on the video of Matt slapping Dave is pretty good and not too shaky as you normally see on regular Youtube videos.  Also, there is no reaction from the camera operator filming this fight (no narration or "Ohhhhh") and the other people besides Bryan in the video don't react either.  So, I will buy that it was staged and that assume that Bar Rescue producers are the ones that filmed the fight.  I don't think there was an "unnamed source" that provided Jon with the video of this.  Whether Jon knew about this fight the first day or found out later could be debated I guess, but you would assume he would have known.

If you look at the additional videos of O'Face on the Spike website like this one, you will see that Jon was genuinely giving them advice, so I don't think the bar was being used to be walked out on.  I think maybe Jon got fed up with everyone after dealing with them for 4 days, and used the fight video that they had as the excuse to stop helping them.

*If you are interesting in watching the video of the slap again, fast forward to 37:15 on the episode at the Spike website (warning - it will make you watch 5 commercials first).

Bar Rescue - The Shot Exchange (The Tailgate) Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Santa Clarita, California to try to rescue The Tailgate bar. The bar is owned by a dysfunctional family, which is causing most of the problems at the bar.  The dad aka Pops is an in your face type of guy who co-owns the bar with his son Matt and daughter Diane.  Some of the problems Jon encounters at the bar besides the family are the exterior, tacky dollar bills on the walls, money being counted on a cutting board, a kitchen fire, and raw chicken contamination in the kitchen.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, The Tailgate was renamed The Shot Exchange, and has a menu featuring 50 shots.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Shot Exchange since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Reviews:
  • "Things I liked -6 bucks for a beast of a shot...-place is nicely redone -shots were tasty -beer selection on tap was nice -bartender chick was super cool....Things I didn't care for -clientele is ghetto fab -Dj fucking sucked..he is playing bossy by whoever the hell sings that song...And other awful shit... Let people just use the jukebox"
  • "The remodel is very nice and airy (a big change from Tailgate's cave feel), the budget did not seem to extend to the bathrooms but they were clean....Everything tasted home made and I was very satisfied for $9....The service was good but in fairness there were only 2 other guys in the place so no challenge.  It is nice to have another option up here in Saugus for craft beer/ good bar food, beyond Wolf Creek.  I definitely will be back."
  • "I used to be a bartender here so my review might not mean a whole lot to everyone but there are a few misconceptions that should be cleared up. We were remodeled by bar rescue on spike and the new decor is beyond amazing. Our demographic has changed from the occasional fights to girls and couples at night and sports fans and locals thru the day"
  • "4 stars up from a 2 before the makeover. Interior is cool and comfortable but it is one LOUD ASS Place.  Maybe 8 people in the bar and you can't hear yourself think. Drinks were good and the bartender was friendly."
  • "New name, new decor, same place with SAME HORRIBLE DJ!!!  So really, this complaint is about the DJ!  What DJ on this earth #1 when you request a song or 2 tells you he doesn't have it and #2, plays the same song 5 times in one night!!"

  • Here are 3 preview videos on the Spike TV website for Bar Rescue, including the most dramatic small grease fire you will ever see.  There are slow responses to extinguish the fire, and the editing shows the biggest flame possible.  When they are actually using the fire extinguisher, you see the flames are very small, followed by big flames being shown, then back to the actual small flame.  Some flour might have done the trick.
  • First Attempt at extinguishing fire
    Fire shown in between
  • Here is The Shot Exchange Facebook page and the website with a menu that has the food and the 50 shots available.  They are pretty much normal shots that most bartenders should be able to make.  Also, here are the beers that are available at the bar.
  • Here are the Facebook pages of some of the employees, Diane (Co-Owner), Carmen (bartender and Mike's wife), Christina (bartender), and Zuzana (bartender)
  • According to a local article, Co-Owner Diane wrote Bar Rescue FIVE times to try to get the bar onto the show, and I guess succeeded.  Diane's sister also wrote on the bar's Facebook page "I'm so proud of my sister and how hard she worked just to get the tailgate on Bar Rescue and transform it into the classy bar it is today ( Shot Exchange). It is a huge difference. Beautiful environment and good people to converse with!"  So apparently she tried hard to get onto the show.
  • That article also stated they were getting the wrong crowd in there and it was being run down.  She was quoted as saying, "It was originally a sports bar, but all these new ones opened up and we’re just a hole in the wall so we had to lower our prices. We (started) getting a really young, gang banger crowd.”
  • Finally the article says, "Shot Exchange now acts as a nightclub geared toward the local college crowd. Most nights have themes and instead of rap music, DJs play top 40s. Miller said the older crowd, their “regulars,” don’t like the change, but business is picking up because the younger crowd enjoys the dance floor and larger appearance because of the large windows that were installed."

Conclusion:

It looks like tonight Jon will change the concept of The Tailgate as a sports bar into a bar called The Shot Exchange geared toward a younger crowd.  The Shot Exchange has 50 shots on its menu and they are each $6.25.  So far, it seems like the reviews are mixed and people like the makeover and the more open feel of the bar, while some people have complaints about the DJ and how loud it is in the bar.  Only time will tell if the bar can get rid of the "gang banger" crowd and attract a different younger crowd by playing "Top 40" music.

Is Bar Rescue Fake? - Lawsuit Says So

$
0
0
While Jon Taffer always claims that Bar Rescue is real and nothing is ever scripted, most people who watch the show feel otherwise.  Yesterday, a lawsuit was filed by Dr. Paul T Wilkes against Bongo LLC (a Bar Rescue production company), Jon Taffer, and his wife Nicole Taffer.  Paul was an owner of the Sand Dollar in Las Vegas, which was on season 3 of the show and renamed to Bar 702.  You may remember the episode titled as "Don't Mess With Taffer's Wife" where Jon gets mad that Paul was hitting on his wife.  The full lawsuit is here from Deadline, but here are some of the highlights that give a lot of insight into the Bar Rescue process:

  • The casting company told Dr. Wilkes that the show was looking at forty bars in the Las Vegas area that were under consideration for the show.  They said those who displayed the most outlandish behavior would be considered the most television worthy, and would be chosen for the next phase of the selection process.  The next phase would be a few people from the company coming to film audition tapes to get a feel of how they would be on camera.
  • During the filming of the audition tape, Dr. Wilkes was instructed to talk to his friends in a natural way as if no cameras were present.  He remembered the "outlandish" behavior being part of the selection process, so he talked about some Vegas strip clubs with his friends.
  • After the audition tape was filmed, the casting company approached the production company about making an episode that focused on a "dirty doctor" who "picks up on strippers."
  • The production company then sent a single cameraman for another audition tape, where they interviewed bar employees including Dr. Wilkes, and asked questions like what he thought of Jon Taffer, the way he dressed, and how he gets in people's faces.
  • Closer to the filming date, producers told Dr. Wilkes that he was 1 of 3 bars under consideration for being selected, and that they would be filmed, with the videos sent to Jon Taffer, who would select the bar chosen to be rescued.
  • When filming Dr. Wilkes at the bar, Dr. Wilkes was doing pushups against the bar and dancing around.  Producers were unsatisfied with the level of extremity, so told him to make disreputable comments to women in the bar.
  • In a later interview before the show, the producer said that in order to "get the show," Dr. Wilkes had to make offensive comments about women.  He was assured that the comments wouldn't be seen by the public and Jon Taffer would be the only one seeing them.  The producer asked graphic questions about women's parts, and when Dr. Wilkes' responses weren't graphic enough, the producer coached him to make his responses more graphic, and to "say it like this."
  • Producers told Dr. Wilkes that Nicole Taffer would be coming into the bar to help with the casting tapes, and when she arrived with a friend, the producers texted Dr. Wilkes to stay away until they give him a cue to approach them.
  • When he got the cue, he approached them and talked to them, while the producers watched from a control room.  The producers weren't satisfied so texted Dr. Wilkes to "Hit on [Mrs. Taffer] hardcore!!"
  • While watching the scene from an SUV, Jon Taffer allegedly called the control room to tell them to have a drink near the spot where he intended to confront Dr. Wilkes, so he could throw it in his face.  He allegedly said to a colleague, "Now I'm going to show you why my show is Number One."
  • Dr. Wilkes then claimed that Jon Taffer came in to confront him, showed him footage of his audition tapes where he insulted the way Jon dressed.  Jon then grabbed the drink in his hand, threw it in his face and smashed the cup in his face.  Jon then spit in his face and tore off his shirt so violently that buttons ripped off his shirt.  Jon then picked up the second drink that was planted and threw it in Dr. Wilkes face.  After that, Jon swung at Dr. Wilkes' head with his electronic tablet, and turned to go towards his coat.  Dr. Wilkes thought he was going for a weapon so tried to restrain him, and was punched in his left jaw by Jon Taffer.  Jon Taffer began hyperventilating and collapsed on the floor, and the entire attack was caught on camera.
  • As a result of this attack, Dr. Wilkes suffers from emotional distress and things such as migraines, nausea, vomiting, night terrors, crying spells, severe depression, and anxiety attacks.

If you are interested, the full episode is available on the Spike TV site, and the video clip is below where the confrontation occurs.

The confrontation in the episode is nothing like the confrontation that Dr. Wilkes describes, so obviously there are some holes in the lawsuit.  If his initial story was true, I am not sure why they would refilm a different confrontation between him and Jon.  If the drink throwing and punching occurred, why would Dr. Wilkes agree to a new confrontation and agree to film for an additional 4 days with Jon?

I think the more interesting part of the lawsuit is how much auditioning and filming they actually do before selecting a bar to be on the show.   Jon Taffer repeatedly claims nothing is scripted, but the bars are definitely coached to be obnoxious so they get selected, and the producers usually have a storyline in mind before they start filming.  Sounds like I may have been right on target with the O'Face video story.

What do you make of this lawsuit?

UPDATE - Here is Dr. Wilkes shirt when he is hitting on Nicole Taffer.  Notice no shirt pocket on the right side of his shirt, and a double pocket on the left side of his shirt.

Supposedly moments later when Jon Taffer comes in to confront him for hitting on his wife, this is the shirt Dr. Wilkes has on.  It has a pocket on the right side now, and only one pocket on the left side:

I would say they are definitely different shirts and once again some clever editing done by Bar Rescue.  Who knows if the first confrontation was exactly as described in the lawsuit or if any copies of the video still exist, but I guess time will tell.

Bar Rescue - Wildcatter Saloon (Bryant's Ice House) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Katy, Texas to try to rescue Bryant's Ice House. The bar is a struggling biker bar owned by Jeff, a former tax accountant.  It is struggling due to a bad reputation and a dysfunctional staff.  One of the bartenders is so drunk and obnoxious, Jon Taffer threatens to "knock his ass out"

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Bryant's Ice House was renamed The Wildcatter Saloon.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Wildcatter Saloon since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Reviews:

All of the reviews for The Wildcatter Saloon appeared to be left by the same person on multiple review sites.  The reviews were positive and were probably left by someone affiliated with the bar.  The reviews on their Facebook page are also mostly positive.

Other News and Links:
  • Spike TV didn't put up any preview videos this week, but here is a short commercial for the episode.
  • The Bar Rescue makeover was in January 2014, and Jeff bought the bar and land (four acres) in 2012 after being a long time customer of the bar.  They must have reached out to Bar Rescue pretty quickly after purchasing the bar.
  • Here is The Wildcatter Saloon Facebook page, Twitter page, and website.  Here is the old Bryant's Ice House webpage as well.
  • The Wildcatter Saloon has upcoming concerts pretty much every Saturday, with most being a $15 charge. (Link)
  • Here is the Facebook page of the owner Jeff, and Randy, who tells "Jon Taggerfee" to kiss his ass. Also, bartenders Missy, Nadya, and Shelley.
  • When the makeover happened in January, there were a lot of comments on the Wildcatter Facebook page regarding the name change.  Some people didn't like it, and others say they will always refer to the bar as Bryant's.  People were also asking if the bar was still biker friendly, which the Wildcatter confirmed multiple times that the bar is still biker friendly, and that "all colors are welcome."
  • There is a bar in Houston, about a half hour away from the Wildcatter Saloon, that is called Wildcatter Two.  I would assume Bar Rescue would have known that, but this may cause some confusion with people thinking they are related.
    Photo - Facebook
  • A user on a Texas A&M forum was at a few days of filming for this Bar Rescue episode and detailed his experience. (Comments from GoAgs92 on both pages).  Some highlights include: 1. For the stress test - doing multiple takes of the owner coming out and saying "Welcome to Bryant's!" followed by the crowd going in.  2. The drink menu only had three drinks on it for the stress test - margarita, cosmo, and "something sour" which are drinks that take time to make. 3. When they sat down at a table during the stress test, they were told to time how long service took with their cell phone.
  • Someone also commented in that thread: "Wildcatter's Saloon was an old biker bar called Bryant's Icehouse. They really didn't change it a whole lot, but apparently it was enough to piss off quite a few of the local clubs who held events and hung out there. A lot of the MC's are refusing to go back. Given the out of the way location and their traditional clientele, I wouldn't be surprised if this renovation costs them business instead of improving it..."
  • A local article has comments from Jon Taffer and the owner Jeff about the makeover.  Jon wanted to make it less of a "biker bar" and more of a neighborhood tavern.  Jeff was happy with the makeover and said he would absolutely do it again.
  • A lot of comments on Facebook, articles, etc. talk about how bad the location is, and that it is hard to find.  Due to this Jon wanted to turn it into more of a destination.

Conclusion:

It sounds like The Wildcatter Saloon is sticking with all of the changes done by Bar Rescue and that the owner Jeff is happy with what was done.  As is usually the case when a bar changes, some of the regulars are upset and it appears some of the bikers do not go there anymore.  Others either like the changes or don't care enough that it would be enough to keep them away.

It seems like one of the main issues with the bar was the location in that it was hard to find and get to.  Maybe the publicity Bar Rescue generates will make people aware of where the bar is now.  The Wildcatter is having concerts there on Saturday's, so it looks like they are sticking with Jon's advice in trying to make it a destination.

Bar Rescue - Pat's Cocktails - A Mixology Bar Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Valley Village, California to try to rescue Pat's Cocktails, which is a sports bar.  The bar manager is too busy "canoodling" in his bar to notice the things that are going on around him.  Jon Taffer gets one of the bartenders to help out with the recon, and gets her to give out tons of free drinks to customers in the bar to see if the manager notices, which he does not.  Jon will need to change how the manager operates to turn this bar around.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Pat's Cocktails was slightly renamed to Pat's Cocktails - A Mixology Bar.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Pat's Cocktails since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "First visit back since bar rescue and the smell is gone...It does seem nicer than before. The mixology in the name is sadly a joke, the mustachioed hipster mixologists in town has that market cornered ,if there are no fresh plant looking things and fat square ice cubes , mixology doesn't apply, they slanging drinks. Have a beer at the dive bar and call it a day."
  • "Cons: Only one pool table now.  Pros: the smell of puke is finally gone! Nice spot, cheap drinks."
  • "I've been an on again off again patron of Pats for nearly a decade... It got a bit rough around the edges about four years ago and I stopped coming in as much. Now that "bar rescue" came in, renovated, restructured and retrained I gave it another shot tonight and had a fantastic time.... they really got a good thing going now...the crowd was good as well as the vibe...I didn't over spend and overall had a really good time. Stop by...you will have a good time too."
  • "Nice spot to relax with friends and have some drinks. Just hate that they got rid of the pool tables. Still a good spot , seems like now they gave a younger crowd since Bar Rescue but who cares."

Negative Reviews:
  • "The only appeal to Pat's was the fact that it was a dive bar.  It's even worse now that it's been "rescued". The one star is for the puke smell being gone...I agree with other reviewers, embrace your diveyness and leave the mixology to Silver Lake."
  • "John Taffer tried, but this bar still sucks. Our bar keep was the only good part of this experience. She was pleasant, prompt and helpful....Don't go here unless you want to over pay for drinks or observe a pig with some lipstick on it."
  • "I should have known from the "A Mixology Bar" on the sign.....  Laughably bad cocktails. Mine was an abomination of gin and Campari. The other was the worst gimlet in the history of cocktails...Call it a sportsbar and stick to blaring TVs and bad beer."

Other News and Links:
  • Here are 2 preview videos of the episode on the Spike TV website.
  • Here is the Pat's Cocktails website, old Facebook page, new Facebook page, and Twitter page
  • Some reviews before Bar Rescue came stated how bad the place smelled, with many saying it smelled like puke and stale beer.  Most reviews also refer to the bar as a dive bar.
  • Pat's had 3 pool tables before the makeover, and Bar Rescue removed them all.  Pat's has since put a pool table back in the bar.
  • Here are the Facebook pages of the manager Jimmy, his wife Monique, and bartenders Vivian, Chad, and Danielle.
  • Monique has pictures that say she was in the show Sons of Anarchy and the movie Shrink.  Jimmy is on IMDB as being in the movie Ambushed, so I guess they are both actors/actresses of some sort.
  • In December after the makeover, Danielle posted a status on her Facebook stating,  "Damn, scrolling thru FB its kind of hurtful to see how quickly people flip! Understand a few things about the "New Pat's"- IT'S FOR A TV SHOW- Entertainment Purposes! Of course the regulars will complain, by nature people don't like change. Some things will be going back to normal very quickly. For years folks complained about the smell, the air conditioning, bar sticky or with tile, the beer was warm, the food sucked! Well I hate to be the one to tell ya, but without Bar Rescue NOTHING was EVER going to get fixed! Nothing got fixed in the 10yrs I've worked there, and it was getting worse by the day. So we took one for the team, we were humiliated on TV put in 12 hour days, didn't have days off for weeks to make Pat's a better place for everyone! Be realistic y'all this is how we earn a living, without a makeover Pat's wasn't going to make it. With every bar in town getting remodeled, we were under pressure to stay relevant to our competition. We know the business side of things- not just the fun stuff our loyal customers love about the old Pat's. Bartenders were making 40% less in tips, so obviously the bars numbers were down considerably as well. Don't be so quick to judge and jump in the hater wagon. Pat's upgraded because we love you guys- believe that!!! ‪#‎yourfuckinwelcome‬"  Vivian and Chad also commented on the status backing up Danielle.
  • Pat's Cocktails reached out to their Facebook fans to leave good Yelp reviews in January. (Link)

Conclusion:

The reviews since Bar Rescue came are mixed, and people still consider it a dive bar/sports bar rather than a mixology bar.  I guess the mixology concept Jon Taffer envisioned is not catching on, and the bar even brought back a pool table due to customer complaints.  It sounds like they were willing to do whatever to get Bar Rescue to makeover the bar including being "humiliated on TV."  One thing that everybody agrees on is that they are happy that the foul smells of the bar are gone.

Bar Rescue - Taza (Oasis Hookah Bar) Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Omaha, Nebraska to try to rescue Oasis Hookah Bar.  When Jon gets there, he notices a bad odor and also bad behavior from the bar employees.  The odor is supposedly a dead rat and the bar is also serving "toxic" drinks to customers.  One of the "toxic" drinks makes a customer puke after just one sip.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Oasis Hookah Bar was renamed to Taza Nightclub.  The bar seems to be using both names and goes by Taza Nightclub/Oasis Hookah Bar.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Taza/Oasis since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "I had a wonderful experience at taza/oasis. The staff and atmosphere was very welcoming and friendly!"
  • "The new hookahs they have are amazing, so smooth. This is what a hookah bar should be!"

Negative Reviews:
  • "Horrible. It took a total of 40 minutes for my friends and I to even be able to smoke the hookah. The hookah only burned for 15 or so minutes till it was done. We saw the staff standing around smoke hookah pens instead of serving us. It also said 12 dollars for a hookah for parties of 4 or more instead of what it really was. It was the worst service I've had at any place."
  • "Horrible service, rude, pushy, and unprofessionally. They also rip you off 5 bucks tell you it's super packed after they take your money then won't give it back, the best way to describe this place is CHEAP and TRASHY"
*Reviews from Oasis/Taza Facebook

Other News and Links:
  • Here are 2 preview videos for this episode on the Spike TV website. In one video a customer pukes after having just 1 sip of a drink.  That guy was supposedly allergic to citrus, which caused him to puke.  The other video has Jon Taffer smelling something bad, which is supposedly a dead rat that ate rat poison and could not be found.  While the bar staff can't find it, Jon miraculously is able to sniff it out like a dog and finds it.
  • Here is the Oasis/Taza Facebook Page, website, and Instagram,
  • Here is a post on a forum from Hookah John describing how he got chosen to be on the show as the hookah expert.  Also, Oasis got all of their new hookahs from Hookah John in January (Link).
  • Here are the Facebook pages of some of the employees - Jesse (owner),  Susie (bartender), Corrie (manager), Brandon, Nathan, and Nick.  Also Tyrie from MTV's The Real World was a bartender in this episode.
  • On a photo after the makeover with the staff and Jon Taffer, Corrie is not in the picture and comments on the photo "Now if you could only cut john out ;] nice photo though!"  So, I would expect her to get fired on the episode from Jon's recommendation.
  • The Oasis Bar has said Bar Rescue gave them awesome new furniture and fixed up their bathrooms.  They also said that the price points for the mixed drinks were higher than they envisioned, but that was Bar Rescue's recommendation. (Link
  • Bar Rescue did the makeover in November 2013, and recommended they turn the place into a 21+ nightclub.  Oasis/Taza went with that recommendation for a few weeks, but turned it back into 18+ all the time. (Link)
  • Hit That Dive was at the stress test and reveal, and will also be interviewing the owner Jesse after the episode airs. (Link).  If anything interesting is revealed in that interview, I will update this post.

Conclusion:

The reviews for Oasis Hookah Bar/Taza Nightclub are mixed and people seem to not like the cover charge or the limited seating after the Bar Rescue makeover.  There are some positive reviews of the new hookahs.  The bar does respond to the reviews on Facebook, so it seems they are putting in the effort to respond to customers and their reviews both good and bad.

Oasis Hookah Bar/Taza Nightclub seems to be happy with the makeover judging by their comments to people on their Facebook Page.  While they have kept the new furniture provided by the show, they decided to turn the place back into an 18 and over place with hookah rather than a 21 and over place suggested by Bar Rescue.

UPDATE - The owner Jesse stated in the comments section that his liquor license for Oasis/Taza operates under a Cigar Bar License.  Therefore, the state of Nebraska requires him to sell tobacco to maintain his liquor license.  That is the reason why he brought the hookahs back with the help of Hookah John.  I guess Bar Rescue overlooked that detail when doing the makeover.

Bar Rescue's Metal & Lace (Headhunters) Has Closed

Headhunters in Austin, Texas, which was on season 3 of Bar Rescue has closed.  When the bar appeared on Bar Rescue, it was renamed to Metal & Lace, and that name stuck for a bit, but looking at their Facebook page, it seems they reverted to Headhunters on all of their ads/flyers.

During the Headhunters episode, you may remember roaches in liquor bottles, the owner Steve Ricci clashing with Jon Taffer and also not paying his bartenders.  Jon didn't even say goodbye to him after he rescued his bar.

Last night, the Austin Chronicle is reporting that the door was locked and the staff was removing production gear from the stages.  When the owner Steve was asked for a comment he declined "citing legal reasons and a personal hatred for the Chronicle (“sucking cock backwards and only caring about themselves"), then asked me to leave".

Steve said he has nine locations he is considering for a future venue site, and there is speculation that there were issues with keeping his lease after the property was bought.  With Headhunters closing and moving out on the last day of the month, that speculation may be correct.

Looking at the public tax records for mixed beverage receipts in Texas, Headhunters claimed $598.77 in mixed beverage receipts in 2/2014 (in the 4-22 file).  For reference, other Bar Rescue bars in Texas had the following receipts for 2/2014 - The Brixton in Austin - $3204.54, and Bryant's Icehouse (Wildcatter) in Katy - $2258.10.

This is the 11th bar that has appeared on Bar Rescue to close, and the Bar Rescue Update Page has been updated with this information.

Bar Rescue - Thirsty's Roadside Bar (Mary's Outpost) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Grand Prairie, Texas to try to rescue Mary's Outpost.  Mary's is a struggling dive bar with an owner who is handing out free drinks despite the fact that the bar is struggling.  The owner Bill also crosses the line with one of Jon Taffer's experts and tries to get girls to take their tops off in his back office.  He does this despite his wife working in the bar.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Mary's Outpost was renamed to Thirsty's Roadside Bar.  From the looks of their website/Facebook, it looks like they are going with a combination of the two and will not commit to one name.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Thirsty's Roadside Bar since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Reviews:

  • "This is my first time at Mary's Outpost. The waitress was very nice to us. It was awesome we got to meet the owner. He was very nice too. Overall very cool place to go for karaoke bar in the grand prairie area. We will definitely be back here. Awesome place. The place looks great.
  • Great place to hang out and do some karaoke with your friends.  Love this place everyone very friendly.  Must go place while in Grand Prairie"
  • "The bartenders and owner are all hanging around, the people you meet are true Texas characters. We've gone back several times, stopping by after work to unwind and also on the weekend when bored at home. It's like walking into a Texas Cheers.  Recently "Bar Rescue" was there, changed the name to Thristy's, but it will always be Mary's Outpost."
  • "No way.   Almost no service,  no posted specials,  nothing at all.  Boo. Can't tell they have been on Bar Rescue at all.  Won't go back.... UPDATED - Owner replied with a great response. I respect that very much. Offered to speak about any issue over a free drink."
*Reviews from Yelp, Tripadvisor

Other News and Links:

  • Here are 2 preview videos for this episode on the Spike TV website.  The owner has a back room where he lures supposedly tries to lure girls back there to take their tops off.  One of the bartenders Nikki acts as his wing woman.
  • Here is the Thirsty's Roadside Bar Facebook page (still listed as Mary's Outpost), another Mary's Outpost Facebook page which is more up to date, and website (with a picture of 5 girls in skimpy bikinis as the first picture).
  • Here is a status from their page "This is the trailer for the show Sunday 8 pm. REMEMBER this is all for show. Bill not sleeping with Nikki, and He was only chasing him around the parking lot for fun. And contrary to later in the show He DID NOT become a nice guy! This should be a very embarrassing, I mean FUN experience."
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in late January 2014.
  • The bar replaced all of the bar stools in March 2014.  It seems the ones Bar Rescue provided were not that great and many people were complaining about them. (Link)
  • The bar also has recently redone their bathrooms and have sold the picnic tables provided by Bar Rescue.
  • In another Facebook status, the bar states: "Ever since Bar Rescue came in we've heard many comments like "It's not Mary's anymore." I don't understand this. Mary's wasn't about the torn up chairs and stools or anything else material. Mary's was and will always be about the people-the customers and employees. Mary's is a place that doesn't care about your age, race, how much you make, gay or straight, Tattoos, piercings, or whatever. Mary's is about a safe place to come and have a good time. None of us are happy with many changes that were made, and we've done our best to improve it with chairs and stools that actually match!, smoke eaters, getting rid of the damn picnic tables, Kimmie's newly remodeled bathrooms and several other things to improve the looks, but those things are "nice-to-haves" not "have-to-haves." Sorry this was so long..."
  • The public Texas Mixed Beverage Gross Receipts for Mary's Outpost were:
    • Before Bar Rescue -  $4803.54 in September 2013, $4831.40 in October 2013, $5024.46 in November 2013, $4707.50 in December 2013,
    • After Bar Rescue - $1405.52 in January 2014, $1866.01 in February 2014, $2388.41 in March 2014
      • So, it looks like gross receipts dropped pretty big, unless they are cooking the books.
  • Here are the Facebook pages of Bill (owner), his wife Kimmie, and Nikki, Elena, Rachael, and Bruce.
  • Here are 5 Youtube videos from someone who was in the bar during the Bar Rescue taping. She seemed to be taping undercover while the crew was filming.  Nothing too special in the videos, but you can see how many cameras are in the bar and some behind the scenes action.
  • The owner Bill has been responding to the few reviews on Yelp.  He is telling people in the positive reviews to look for them on Bar Rescue, and he offered a free drink to someone that left a negative review. (Link)

Conclusion:

The few reviews of Thirsty's Roadside Bar seem to like the atmosphere of the bar and their karaoke.  Judging by the Facebook page of the bar, some of the regulars were upset by the changes.  The mixed beverage gross receipts submitted to the state of Texas seem to indicate that business has been down a bit since Bar Rescue visited.

This episode looks like it is going to focus on the owner Bill.  The bar has said everything was done for show, and that Bill is not sleeping with Nikki.  They also expect the episode to be embarrassing/fun.  Bill has responded Yelp reviews online and their Facebook page is pretty open, so it will be interesting to see their reaction after the show.

Also, Nikki who was fired on the show, still works at the bar and is friends with Kimmie on Facebook.

O'Face's Liquor License Renewal Rejected By City Council

Last night at the Council Bluffs, Iowa City Council meeting, the O'Face bar was trying to get their liquor license renewed, and it was rejected by the city council by a vote of 3-2.  There were seven liquor license applications reviewed that night, and O'Face's was the only one rejected.

The three city council members who voted against the renewal said that O'Face's appearance on Bar Rescue put the city in a bad light, and the mayor agreed.  They said the city is suffering as a result of the show and the mayor has received emails from around the country telling him how embarrassing it was for the city.

The mayor told the owner Matthew Overmyer "I understand this is a reality show, but the depiction of this inaccuracy has caused irreparable harm to the city.  This sort of show concerns me that you would hold out this community in a false light.  We all make mistakes, but we have to pay for them.”

Matt said that he has gotten a lot of negative feedback from people and even death threats and apologized for putting Council Bluffs in a bad light.  He was quoted as saying the experience has "been nothing but hell."  Matt plans to appeal the council decision to try to keep his license.

I guess as Jon Taffer would say, SHUT IT DOWN!

The local news is at the bar tonight interviewing employees, so we will see what they have to say tonight after the story airs.  I will do an update to this post or do another post if there is anything interesting said.

Bar Rescue - Houston Sports Hub (End Zone) Update

$

Tonight on the season finale of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Houston, Texas to try to rescue End Zone Sports Bar and Grill.  The bar and the kitchen in the End Zone is filthy and the beer they are serving the customers is sour.  The bar is owned by two "muscle-bound meatheads" who get in a fight with each other during the recon.  Two other female employees also get into a fight while the bar is under surveillance.  Despite all of the fighting, Jon Taffer still goes through with the rescue and makes over the bar.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, End Zone Sports Bar and Grill was renamed to Houston Sports Hub, and they seem to have kept the name.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Houston Sports Hub since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Reviews:
  • "This is the first bar I have been to where I feel welcomed, and at home. I guess you can say "My home away from home." During the day time you have lots of regulars, from business men to veterans. During the Houston Texans daytime games I would bring my family and have a blast."
  • "When I first walked in I liked the interior. Cool clean sports concept. I looked over the  new bar and food menus. Over the course of the night I ordered the Texan Truce and Shasta Shot. All I could taste was the lemon juice it was very sour and unbalanced. I also ordered the Astro Tea which was very good. Some of the bartenders drank behind the bar.....The bathroom also needed some attention and the soap dispenser was broken. I probably won't be coming back based on the lack of commitment I saw by management not maintaining the standards set by Jon Taffer."
  • "Pros:  cheap drinks, no cops, karaoke, ok food, (free) parking lot, easily accessible/ok for neighborhood bar, IF you're friends with management, they take care of you. Cons: no good wine :(,  no dance floor, trashy clientele, many of which snorting coke on patio and/or inside bar, not enough wait staff,  bar owners have too much control/are on-site entirely too often (led to decline in loyal regulars), ice tastes funny,  dirty hole-in-wall atmosphere, even after the remodel, floozy, inattentive bartenders,  remodel (courtesy of "Bar Rescue") was complete waste; only difference now is the name (Houston Sports Hub) and the superfluous/non-functional interior decorations to make the bar appear more "sporty"

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in January 2014
  • Here are 2 preview videos of the episode on the Spike TV website that have both of the fights.
  • Jon Taffer will be live tweeting during the episode and answering questions with the #TafferTalk hash tag.
  • Here is the old End Zone Sports Bar Facebook Page, the new Houston Sports Hub Facebook Page, and website with menu.
  • Here are the Facebook pages of Justin (owner), Dana (Justin's wife), Shawn (owner), Stephanie (Shawn's wife - Fights Taylor)  Taylor (bartender)  Samantha (bartender), and Kiana (bartender)
  • Taylor and Stephanie are Facebook friends.
  • Shawn seems to be embarrassed about his appearance on the show, and has commented on multiple posts saying he is "not happy" about it.
  • Shawn has had some MMA fights and has a 2-4 record with 4 straight losses. (Link)
  • The owner Justin was a male stripper and has wrote multiple books (found here) about being a stripper.  Him and his wife are also on a few erotic book covers such as this one (pictured right)
  • The Houston Sports Hub Tax receipts submitted to the state of Texas - Before Bar Rescue - August 2013 - $9704.52, September 2013 - $8862.98,  October 2013 - $8793.12, November 2013 - $7897.68, December 2013 - $6953.94, After Bar Rescue - January 2014 - $3168.69, February 2014 - $3228.39, and March 2014 - $4005.99.  So it looks like business went down according to receipts and business wasn't bad before the Bar Rescue visit.
  • In July of 2013, Justin posted on his Facebook page - "Bar rescue just called my bar. Should I or shouldn't I?"  Most people said to do it, and when someone asked "Do you need it?", Justin responded "No, but a free new bar and all the advertisement is hard to pass up"  So it looks like Bar Rescue contacted the bar to be on the show, rather than the bar applying to be on the show.  This seems to be the case for the upcoming season, and I will probably do a post about that soon.
  • Justin has left six different 5-star reviews for his own bar on Yelp and seems to stress the fact that there are "hot girls" on his staff in all of his reviews. (Link

Conclusion:

Judging by the comments Justin made about Bar Rescue calling his bar, and the tax receipts submitted for the bar, it looks like this was not a struggling bar in need of a rescue.  Also, it doesn't seem like people are too impressed with the Bar Rescue upgrades and it is still the same bar with just a different name.

UPDATE - Someone posted a comment clarifying the tax receipts, stating: "Before Jan 1st of 2014, bar owners were require to pay a Gross Receipts Tax of 14%. On the Jan 1st of 2014 the law changed. The new requirements lowered The Gross Receipts Tax to 6.7%. However owners are now required to collect A Mixed Beverage Sales Tax of 8.25%. The difference is that the "Sales Tax" is now just passed on to the consumer where as before it was included in the price of a drink. Owners caught a break and the consumers are getting the short end of the stick. Most customers never noticed the change. Based on the Gross Receipts Tax paid, the alcohol sales for Oct 2013-$62,808; Nov 2013-$56,412; Dec 2013-$49,665.29; Jan 2014-$47,293; Feb 2014-$48,184; Mar 2014-$59,790. These are alcohol sales only and include no food sales."

Also, Justin had some quotes in the Houston Chronicle, and said: "It was a great experience. I wouldn't do it again, though, because I don't like being yelled at. The yelling wasn't so bad. It was the stress."  He also said Jon Taffer is a really nice guy and they kept all of the changes he made.

UPDATE - Apparently Shawn is no longer a co-owner at the bar, and Justin is running the bar on his own.

The Never Before Seen 'Bar Rescue' Pilot Airs Sunday

This Sunday on Spike TV, the first ever episode of Bar Rescue that was filmed will be airing for the first time on TV.  Jon Taffer is at a New Jersey bar, where the owner has a habit of kicking out both customers and employees.

Spike TV has been airing this 15 second ad for the show, and there has also been a lot of chatter on social media about it.  Many people thought that when they saw a "lost"Bar Rescue episode would be airing that it would be the Music City Mess episode.  That was the Bar Rescue episode that was pulled after the bar owner killed someone at the bar just days before it was scheduled to air.  That episode accidentally aired once on Spike TV, but has not aired since.

So if you are interested in seeing the first ever Bar Rescue filmed and seeing how much has changed since, be sure to tune in to Spike TV this Sunday at 8pm ET.  As a bonus, you get to see Jon Taffer rocking bowling shirts (pictured) and with a little more hair on his head.  Look for the update for the bar appearing in the episode to be posted here on Sunday.

Bar Rescue - The V Bar (South Park Bar & Grill) Update

Tonight on Spike TV is the special 'lost' episode of Bar Rescue where they will be showing the pilot of the show for the first time.  Bar Rescue started airing on Spike TV in July of 2011, and this pilot was filmed in June of 2010.

In the pilot episode, Jon goes to South Park Bar & Grill in Montclair, New Jersey.  The bar has a hot head owner who is kicking both customers and employees out of his bar.  He also doesn't seem to respect his employees or Jon Taffer's knowledge.

It appears that they renamed South Park Bar & Grill to The V Bar (short for Vodka Bar) during the makeover, but the name did not stick.  The bar changed their name again to The Park Sports Bar not long after Jon Taffer made all of the changes.  Lets take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Park Sports Bar since Bar Rescue came to their bar in 2010.

The Park Sports Bar closed in October of 2012 due to the bar losing their liquor license after years of rowdy behavior at the bar.

News and Links relating to the bar and the closure:
  • Here are three preview videos of the episode on the Spike TV website, and Jon has his wife Nicole doing the recon as in other earlier Bar Rescue episodes.
  • This Yelp review in June 2010 talked about a show filming at the bar, and stated that it was called "Bars on the Brink."  So I guess that was the original working title for Bar Rescue.
  • Here is an article that talked about the makeover of South Park and the name change to The V Bar.  The article said the makeover was for a new series on Spike TV, and a comment in that article also said it was to be called "Bars on the Brink."  Other comments talk about how crappy the bar was, and a supposed former employee claimed there were cockroaches everywhere.
  • Here was the Park Sports Bar Facebook page, which was kept up to date until it shut down.
  • Here is the owner Jeff's Facebook Page.
  • The Yelp, Urbanspoon, and Foursquare reviews for the bar were not too good.  People in the reviews and in the comments of articles said the location was great and they have one of the only liquor licenses in Montclair, but they didn't know how to run a bar.

  • On May 30th 2012, "Prosecutor Kenneth Strait Jr. brought up 12 charges against the bar, including buying alcohol from a prohibited source and illegal drug use on the premises. The drug use allegation, as reported by The Montclair Times, occurred in 2009 when police on an ABC (Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control) inspection found owner Jeffry Melnikoff smoking pot inside the bar.  Other charges include incidents initially reported over two years ago, including five reported bar fights, several with underage patrons. With each charge, the bar could face a 30-day liquor license suspension." (Link)
  • On June 19th 2012, there was a city council meeting attended by about 50 neighbors of the bar who were objecting the renewal of the Park Sports Bar's liquor license. They contended that "blaring music from the bar and the profanity-laced shouting of its intoxicated patrons as they exit the place and hang around outside after closing has been disturbing their sleep for years."  They also complained about "groups of anywhere from five to 30 "rowdy drunks" loitering outside the pub between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on a regular basis."  Despite the complaints, the liquor license was renewed with the only condition being that they had to hire a professional security guard outside the bar from 10pm to 2:30am.
  • In October of 2012, Jeff Melnikoff plead no contest to the 12 charges against him filed on May 30th.  This resulted in a 30-day liquor license suspension - 5 days for excessive noise, 15 days for a brawl outside the bar in December 2010, and 10 days for serving too much alcohol to a patron (Link).  He closed the bar for good after that.

Conclusion:

Despite having a prime location and a hard to get liquor license in New Jersey (some people were saying it was worth about $700,000), Jeff let the trouble at the bar bring him to closure.  The bar was in business for 12 years total, and closed a little over two years after Jon Taffer filmed the pilot episode at the bar.

O'Face's Liquor License Suspended Seven Days and Fined $1,000

On May 30th, O'Face agreed to a settlement with the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division for an incident that occurred at their bar on November 11th, 2012.  The bar admitted guilt and said they "sold, dispensed, or gave an alcoholic beverage or beer to persons who were intoxicated at the time."

According to the settlement, O'Face will have their liquor license suspended for seven days from 8am, October 5, 2014 to 8am, October 12, 2014.  During that period, the bar can remain open for other lawful activities, but no alcohol of any kind can be sold or given away during that time frame.  They also must pay $1,000 to the Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division.

Here is the link with information regarding the settlement.

This comes just after the Council Bluffs City Council rejected their liquor license.  O'Face appealed that decision, and has a hearing date for their liquor license renewal on July 28th (link to documents).  Look for an update on that after the hearing occurs.
