Here is just an update to remind you that New Bar Rescue episodes will begin on Sunday, February 8th.  The Bar Rescue Facebook page posted the picture on the right confirming the start of more new episodes.

I am not sure if this will still be considered season 4 of Bar Rescue, but whatever season they classify it as, expect 10 more new episodes.  There have been episodes shot in Miami, Florida and San Francisco, CA, so expect those to show up on this season.

As always, come here to Bar Rescue Updates to see updates on every episode of the new season. To see how all of the bars that have appeared on Bar Rescue are doing, visit the Bar Rescue Update page.

Bar Rescue - Second Base Bar and Grill Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Orange, California to re-rescue Second Base Bar and Grill.  The bar was on the second season of Bar Rescue and was transformed from Extremes into Second Base Bar and Grill.  The bar was has gone back downhill with the owner not putting any money back into the bar and they have stopped serving their Bar Rescue food and drinks.

During the Second Base Bar and Grill re-rescue, Jon Taffer said he would put about $100,000 into the Second Base re-rescue, but only if the owner Terry was willing to put up some money of his own.  Terry needed to put up about $30,000 of his own money for Jon to start the makeover, which he refused and said he could not come up with the money.  So Jon walked out without making any changes.  Here are some updates for Second Base Bar and Grill since Bar Rescue visited the first time.

Reviews:

There are a lot of bad reviews for Second Base on Yelp, which complain about fights, rude bartenders, and filth.

Other News and Links:
  • Here is a preview video of the episode, and you can also watch the full episode before it airs on the Spike TV app.
  • Here is the Second Base Bar and Grill website, which has a "As Seen On Bar Rescue" picture at the top.
  • Here is the Second Base Facebook page which is kept up to date.  Judging by all the recent photos, it appears that everybody from the show is still working there despite Jon suggesting they find other places to work.
  • Here is the Second Base Twitter page and Instagram page
  • Here are the Facebook pages of Sara, Renae, and Gary.  Gary and Sara appear to be together.
  • As reported earlier on this site, there was a fatal shooting behind Second Base Bar and Grill in November of 2013.
  • Jon Taffer will be doing a Taffer Talk on Twitter during this episode if you are interested.
  • This is the second time Jon Taffer has walked out on a bar, with the other bar being O'Face.

Conclusion:

Second Base Bar and Grill continues to get a lot of bad reviews and the shooting that happened outside the bar probably didn't help business either.  It seems that Gary and the bartenders from the show all still work at the bar despite Jon suggesting they find somewhere else to work.

Whether Jon was actually going to re-rescue the bar or if they did all of this for TV is probably up for debate.

Bar Rescue - Clear Bar (Underground Wonder Bar) Update

$

0
On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Chicago, Illinois to try to rescue the Underground Wonder Bar.  The bar is a live music bar owned by Lonie Walker, and since the bar moved locations it has been struggling.  Lonie is more concerned about live music and performing at her bar than the actual success of the bar.  Underground Wonder Bar is supposedly $515,000 in debt and Jon Taffer is there to turn that around.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Underground Wonder Bar was renamed to Clear Bar.  That name did not stick as they quickly went back to the Underground Wonder Bar.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Underground Wonder Bar since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "Great intimate place to hear awesome live music. Staff is very friendly and Lonnie gets the whole audience involved. I highly recommend it."
  • "House band, Lonie walker and her bad ass company band, was one of the most amazing bands I'd seen. Got the crowd participating. Drinks were a bit more expensive than what i'm used to, but i'm not used to downtown Chicago prices. All the bar staff were pretty freindly. If I lived in Chicago I would be in this bar every Friday."
  • "Had live music which was excellent but I can't remember the name of the band. Bartender was cool and always had a pint of Guinness ready for me. Thanks!"
  • "Nice chill place. Loved the music and the crayons they give you for coloring! But had to leave cuz the music was wayyyy too loud"
  • "Ambiance & live music are great!"

Negative Reviews:
  • "Extremely disappointed by quality of music.  I have heard high school jazz groups that were more talented than this band.  They played for a half hour and then took almost a half hour break.  If you are going to charge a cover, hire some quality talent! We will never return even though we live close by."
  • "Awful!!! Horrible!! Worst jazz music ever. Unsure what's happening tonight. $15 for cover charge, awful!!! No words but awful"
  • "Music was awesome!!! That's the only good thing about this place. Food is over priced and bland. Lacks flavor...Drinks were watered down. Only thing this place has to offer me Is the live music and great performances."
  • "Do NOT order food here. It was literally like someone microwaved something out of the frozen foods section."

  • Here are the Facebook pages of the owner Lonie, Jordan, Akubu and Ruby
  • Jon Taffer said this episode was one of his favorites of all time. (Link)
  • Right after the makeover, Wonder Bar posted this on their Facebook page, "So underground wonder bar will forever be home!! We got a beautiful new upgrade and along with that came a name suggestion! We will comply for bit , but make no mistake it is the people and the music that have made this place home for almost 25yrs and to be Clear the family you know and love is still in complete control . Thanks fir all the love and support keep it coming !!!!"
  • In December 2014, ChicagoJazz.com interviewed Lonnie about the Bar Rescue experience, and Lonnie said this regarding the name change,
"Who the bleep knows why Taffer wanted to change our name after 25 years. Clear Bar represents the new reverse osmosis water filtration system that they installed for us, which runs through all of our soda guns and even the ice machine, which is awesome, but we don’t how that justifies a name change?"  She also confirmed that "It will forever and always be the Underground Wonder Bar!"
  • Lonie recently posted this on her Facebook page regarding the Bar Rescue episode,
"Soooooo...... Be prepared to watch me cry and curse and curse and cry. I used to love that show ....... But please watch bc if it was for "nothing" and just the product (s) that they gifted us then it was for naught. We OBVIOUSLY did not keep their name....clear bar .... Huh? Take the wonder away ..... Because Oh! Wonder is childish and not sophisticated and and we'll see why else Wonder is a bad word ....But they did clear out the basement which is being launched as the Roots Room ( not Count Room .....huh?)
They also gave us an Amazing reverse osmosis water filtration system...YaY ... What does this have to do with live music you ask ? I Wonder Bar too but am happy fir the addition bc I Love that I don't have to bring my own filtered water in from home ( in reusable glass bottles) so yeah come drink the water, order a drink, eat some food as you Dance Dance Dance to Live Music. Oh yeah don't forget to bring home your crayon drawing \0/ happy people who don't yell live longer and ..... Happier. Underground Wonder Bar lives ....."
  • A comment on Lonie's Facebook page said, "The whole show is a made up lie. It's more like $80,000. He added in the money she borrowed from people to get into the bar 3 years ago. She's paid most of that back. The real issues that needed "rescuing" we're never addressed... They just used what would create the most drama."

Conclusion:

The reviews of Underground Wonder Bar since the Bar Rescue makeover seem to be mixed with some people liking the music, while others have complaints about the music.  There are also a lot of complaints about the food.

Clear Bar, the name given by Bar Rescue, did not stick long as the Underground Wonder Bar quickly changed their name back (the crayons are back too).  It seems like there was no chance the Underground Wonder Bar would have accepted a name change anyways.

Bar Rescue Now Casting For Next Season

I get a lot of questions from people asking how they can get a bar to be on Bar Rescue, so I figured I would do a post to let everyone know that Bar Rescue is currently casting.

Metal Flowers Media is doing the casting for the next season and they are currently looking for bars in Tampa, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Oklahoma City.  They usually pick the city first, and then find the bars, so if you are trying to get on the show and aren't in one of these cities, you are most likely out of luck.

If you want to apply to be on the show, you can fill out an application at the Metal Flowers Media website, and they have also set up a Facebook page and Twitter page for Bar Rescue casting.  Also, if you are interested here is the actual Metal Flowers Media Facebook page.

Bar Rescue - Bonny and Read's (Toucan's Oceanside Bar & Grill) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Hollywood Beach, Florida to try to rescue Toucan's Oceanside Bar & Grill.  The bar is co-owned by friends Jamie and John, and they have already survived multiple hurricanes.  Jamie recently lost a son and things started to go downhill at the bar.  They are supposedly $250,000 in debt and about 5 months from having to close.  To top it all off, there are rats in the kitchen of the bar.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Toucan's Oceanside Bar and Grill was renamed to Bonny & Read's.  The bar seems to have embraced the name and still goes by Bonny & Read's.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Bonny & Read's since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "The experience was great! We went to the boardwalk looking for dinner with a view, and got a spot 10 feet from the beach. The food was excellent and our server couldn't have been more pleasant."
  • "This is a no frills place on the beach with standard bar food and some standout dishes....A hard working, friendly staff. Reasonable prices for this area. Worth a visit."
  • "Boasts "Best Bloody Mary on the beach". It was good.... Staff was very friendly and service was quick."
  • "Watched a few games here yesterday and a had a great experience. If your a local this place is for you. Prices a fair and the the staff is friendly."

Negative Reviews:
  • "I went to Toucans before Bar Rescue and apparently after. It was a dive yes but a good dive. I always loved going in there. I recently went in and saw there were some changes but it honestly looked like some kmart make-over. Plus, the service SUCKED. I mean SUCKED. It was much better before...Sometimes a dive is just supposed to be a dive."
  • "We went there with a party of 8 with high hopes because of the show Bar Rescue. This place is terrible. We waited forever for food and we tried to be as patient as possible...The manager was half drunk and not helpful at all. He was rude and unapologetic for his awful restaurant. I wouldn't send my worst enemy there! Don't go, if you want to enjoy a meal!"
  • "Slow service. Wimpy salad, and my peel n' eat shrimp was papery and wicked dry. I am going to feed the leftovers to the Pelicans"
  • "Since they did bar rescue they are now over priced cant smoke inside etc etc..They will lose the locals and the tourists are here for 3 months im sure they wont get them in not for what they are charging...Like management dont like new bartender..."
Reviews from Yelp, Tripadvisor

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in November 2014.
  • Here are preview videos of the episode from the Spike TV website - Video 1 (Intro), Video 2 (rats), Video 3 (stress test).  They just happened to have cameras on the floor to film the rats....
  • Here is the Bonny & Read's Facebook page and Twitter page.  Here is the old Toucan's Facebook page.
  • Here is the Bonny & Read's website, which is pretty well done and has a food menu, drink menu, a detailed about us section, and a description of the legend of Bonny and Read.
  • Here are the Facebook pages of Jamie, John, Tara, and Kali
  • Here are the last 3 restaurant inspection reports for Toucan's Oceanside Bar and Grill. The latest one in September 2014 had 13 violations, with just one being high priority.
  • Bar owner Jamie's son, Jamie IV, was murdered in December 2013.  Jamie IV was arrested in November 2013 for failing to appear in court on a possession of methamphetamine charge.  He turned into a confidential informant for the Polk County Narcotics Team and did a controlled drug deal.  When the dealers found out he was an informant, they beat him to death and dumped his body in the woods (Article with details). The picture of Jamie IV from the local paper vs. the mug shot in the Oregon article is very different and shows what meth can do to people.

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name of Bonny & Read's and has created new websites and Facebook pages with the new name. So they appear happy with the name change and will probably keep it long-term.

The reviews since the Bar Rescue makeover have been mixed, with people both complementing and complaining about the service.  A few of the negative reviews seem like regulars who do not like the Bar Rescue makeover for changing their bar.

Bar Rescue - Ele (Heat Restaurant & Lounge) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Hollywood, Florida to try to rescue Heat Restaurant & Lounge.  The bar is co-owned by Vin and Vanessa, who are husband and wife.  They bought the bar in 2012 and things started to go downhill when they slashed prices, which attracted a bad crowd.  Heat's bartenders also are out of control and they are giving away a ton of free drinks.  They also act more like strippers than bartenders and are dancing for tips.  Vin and Vanessa are supposedly $230,000 in debt and are losing $5,000 a month, so they called on Bar Rescue to help out.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Heat Restaurant & Lounge was renamed to Ele.  The bar seems to have kept a variation of the name and goes by Ele Lounge and Ele Nightclub.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Ele since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Reviews:
There have been no reviews of Ele since the Bar Rescue makeover.

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in the middle of November 2014.
  • Here are 3 preview videos for the episode from the Spike TV website - Video 1 (Intro), Video 2, Video 3 (Recon).
  • Here is the old Heat Facebook page, which doesn't have any posts.  There is no Ele Facebook page.  There is also no website for the bar.
  • Here are the Facebook pages of Vin (owner), Vanessa (owner), Isabella (bartender), Nini (bartender)
  • Isabella posted on her Facebook page, "Let the count down begin this Sunday catch me on Spike Tv Season 4 Bar Rescue .. you can watch the preview now spiketv.com/barrescue. Please don't judge me it was for TV lmaooo pleading the 5th !!!!"
  • Photo - Instagram
    • She also commented on that post, saying the show "is real but I just acted a little out of control for it to be more interesting"
  • Ele Lounge does have an Instagram page, which is pretty much a bunch of re-posted posters advertising each night at the club.  It makes it seem like they have other people doing promotions for their events at the bar.  There are "We Good Thursday's,"Heat Wave Fridayz", "Simply Sexy Saturdays",  "Champagne Sundays", and Turn Up Tuesday.  There is also an Instagram called Lesbians of Miami that advertises Lez Heat Thursdays at Ele Lounge.
  • Most of the events advertise bottle service and hookahs, so apparently they have hookahs at the bar.
  • There is a Heartless Entertainment Instagram that does Heat Wave Fridayz.  In that, you will see recent pictures of the bartenders still up to their dancing ways.  Here is a picture(right) of a bartender in the new outfit provided by Bar Rescue grinding for some $1 bills.
  • Ele Lounge is having a watch party tonight at the bar, and the Instagram pages of some of the employees from the show are mentioned in the comments. They also seem happy with the makeover. (Link)
  • Isabella, who was fired on the show, was back working at Ele shortly after the episode.  Here she is with a new Ele Lounge uniform on.

Conclusion:
This one was tough to get information on as there were no reviews, and the bar doesn't have any online presence besides an Instagram page.  The bar has somewhat kept the name, and they seem to use both Ele Lounge and Ele Nightclub.  They also seem to be happy with the makeover.

Rooting through the Instagram posters/pictures, it seems like not much has changed besides the name of the bar.  The bartenders still seem to be dancing for more tips while working and Isabella was re-hired.  Also, I doubt Jon Taffer would recommend the names that each of their weekly events have.

Bar Rescue - The Hot Rock Bar & Grille (Sandbar Grill) Update

Photo - Spike TV
On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Coconut Grove, Florida to try to rescue the Sandbar Grill.  The bar is co-owned by Albert and Matt, and Albert is too concerned with his fantasy football team to pay attention to his bar.  The bar was thriving but the local government made some changes in 2010 that impacted the bar.   The bar is supposedly losing $7,000 a month and is two months away from closing.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Sandbar Grill was renamed to The Hot Rock Bar & Grille, which had a Korean BBQ theme.  The bar quickly changed the name back to Sandbar Grill and also put back up some old decorations.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Sandbar Grill since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "The food was very good and seemed a little less expensive than some other swankier looking places not far away. Great service and it seemed to have a local following which is always a good sign."
  • "After the awful Bar Rescue remodel, which switched the name and concept to a Korean BBQ joint called HotRocks, Sandbar is back to normal. Some of the best fish tacos in Miami, cold beer and huge TVs -- great place to catch a game!"
  • "After coming here a few times since that show was taped (but has never been aired as of this writing), this place is still pretty much the same Sandbar Grill we've all known and loved...most everything is still the same or has been brought back since the show was filmed...Including the oversized wooden lifeguard seat.  Even the speakers with decades of dust on them are still hanging in the same spot, and sadly, the restrooms which really did need attention, never got any love"
  • "Love it. Best bar in cocowalk. Drinks were strong and reasonably priced. Staff was amazing and on point."

Negative Reviews:
  • "This place use to be a coconut give staple. Stopped by today after not being here for a couple years. Wow has it dropped off. Drinks, food, service, everything was subpar."
  • "The most frustrating part of this so-called renovation: the bathrooms are still among the most disgusting in Coconut Grove!! How can a TV show come in and give it a makeover but leave the broken doors and sticky floors the same? I won't get over this for awhile."
  • "I'm not sure whose idea it was to have Jon Taffer come in and rip the soul out of Sandbar, but whoever thought that was a great idea should be excommunicated, if not put to sleep. A resounding Fuck You to Bar Rescue and another epic Fuck You to Jon Taffer"
  • "The Sandbar was once a fun bar where I'd go to hangout, drink & party after kickball. Unfortunately, thanks to #BarRescue, that place full of fun memories is gone. The decor has been replaced with a poor imitation of an upscale bar which is not reflective of the area surrounding it..I wasn't impressed with the renovation or changes to the menu."
*Reviews from Tripadvisor, Yelp

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in November of 2014.
  • Here are 3 preview videos of the episode from the Spike TV website - Video 1 (Intro), Video 2 (Shut it down), Video 3(Recon)
  • There are two Sandbar Grill Facebook pages.  Here is one and the other.
  • Here is the Sandbar Grill website and menu, and they still have the lava rock on the menu as well as $9.25 cocktails.
  • The Sandbar Grill appears to be a franchise as there are multiple locations (Link).
  • Here are the Facebook pages of Albert (owner), Matt (owner).
  • Albert changed his profile picture to a picture of Jon Taffer next to Shrek, so he obviously isn't a fan of Jon.
  • Sandbar Grill is having a watch party for the episode and are advertising it with the hashtag #UnTaffered.
  •  Albert posted a comment on Facebook that said, "Show is a scam but karaoke has been going on for years. They didn't touch the bathrooms but that project is coming this summer."
  • The Sandbar Grill put took down the Bar Rescue sign and put up a brand new sign with a shark (pictured right)
Bar Rescue Sign - Left, New Sign - Right
  • In a blog post about the bar after the makeover, there were a lot of people commenting about the Bar Rescue makeover being crappy and complaining that they didn't fix the dirty bathrooms. There were also a lot of customer complaints on social media during the makeover.
  • On an Eater article right after the makeover, owner Matt was quoted saying, "We're going to change some of the nights, introduce specialty food nights, get rid of some of the cheap gimmicks."  He also said they were going to focus on a lunch crowd and dinner crowd, but that isn't an effort to get rid of the college kids.
  • Albert was sued in 2014 by an employee for failing to pay overtime rates over 40 hours a week.  The lawsuit also says Sandbar Grill had gross sales of greater than $500,000 each year from 2010 to 2013, and were expected to exceed $500,000 in 2014 as well. (Link to lawsuit).
  • I tried to figure out how Albert did in his fantasy leagues, but got no response. The update at the end of the show did say he won $3,500 in them.

Conclusion:

After the Bar Rescue makeover, The Hot Rock Bar & Grille quickly changed their name back to the Sandbar Grill.  The owners and customers didn't seem happy with the makeover and have been outspoken about the Bar Rescue changes.  The bar has also brought back a lot of their old decorations that Jon Taffer removed, installed a new sign, and has plans to renovate the bathrooms in the summer.  Sandbar has kept some of the changes and still serves the Bar Rescue cocktails and a menu item with the hot rock.

The reviews of Sandbar Grill since the Bar Rescue makeover are mixed, with people complaining about the Bar Rescue changes, and the filthy bathrooms.  The positive reviews are mostly people who say they have always loved the bar.

It seems like the reviews were not too bad before the makeover and people commented how the place was always packed, so who knows if it was actually in need of a rescue.  They seem to have money available for a new sign and planned bathroom renovations in the summer.  Perhaps they were hoping for a free makeover and it didn't go exactly as they wanted.

Bar Rescue - Stein Haus Brau & Brats (Friar Tuck's) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Pomona, California to try to rescue Friar Tuck's.  Friar Tuck's is a castle-shaped bar, and the owner Ivan has anger management issues that has pushed his staff to their breaking point.  Ivan does not get along well with his bartenders, or his general manager Sami, and he is supposedly $100,000 in debt due to the bar.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Friar Tuck's was renamed to Stein Haus Brau & Brats, which has a German theme most likely due to the castle exterior.  The bar has kept the name of Stein Haus Brau & Brats.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Stein Haus Brau & Brats since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "Cool local place, great German brews, and a nice Brat to boot. Two pool tables and plenty of monitors with sports make this place a local winner. Best of luck to you guys."
  • "First time I had been since the makeover.....much better!! Food looked good and next time I will plan to eat there. Staff was friendly along with the small crowd....I really liked the decor....dark wood tables and chairs. Good job!!!!"
  • "Much better than before. Different crowd. Better beer selection. Would be better with more craft beers on tap. Didnt try the food got here after 12. Cool band playing tonight...Stoked for the future of this place!"
  • "Nice change! Inside is really cool looking now. No more mismatched broken tile. Seams like a new crowd in here. New faces, they must be drawing in lot's of new people...it seems like everyone loves the food who is eating in here."
  • "Stein Haus Brau & Brats has done a good job cleaning up Friar Tucks and still has that home feel to it! They also have a awesome DJ that plays everything and well!"
  • "Great service!  The drinks are tasty and the food is delicious!  I found the bartenders to be very friendly.  My wife had the German heff and pork schnitzel sandwich and I had a  cold stein of Ludwig and the beer poached bratwurst.  Great atmosphere. Definately going back."

Negative Reviews:
  • "I came here at about 8 pm on a weekday night.   I was hungry and looking forward to trying their German food...The menu seemed very limited, but there was a brat sandwich.   Figuring that was the signature dish I asked the bartender for one.   "The cooks gone home.   We are not serving food."...If you want a dive beer bar, it might be worth a try."
  • "Pot holes, pot holes, pot holes! Did Bar Rescue quit the renovation midway through? That can be the only explanation for old Friar Tuck's turning into Stein Haus and still not fixing the awful pot holes laden through the parking lot."
  • "I like the color brown, heck I am brown, that being said wtf is up with the entire inside and outside painted dookie brown? Were no other colors available at the Home Depot?..Another confusing thing is the place is called Stein Haus but yet only pints and pitchers served? No liters served like other traditional German/Oktoberfest type restaurants. The food is really good, the braut was tasty. Also, make sure you have plenty of air in your tires before you come because there are potholes in the parking lot that are bigger than craters on the moon."
  • "Female bartender less then friendly, didn't get a chance to look at the bar/app flyer, didn't get informed about any promoted drinks.  Sad to say the problem with this place is regulars and staff, because this place wants to be awesome and packed, but as I said before it didn't seem inviting."

Bar Rescue - LA Brew Co (Los Angeles Brewing Company) Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Los Angeles, California to try to rescue Los Angeles Brewing Company.  The bar is located in downtown Los Angeles, and is owned by Richard Ramos who is supposedly a million dollars in debt and losing $15,000 a month.  The debts and disagreements caused by owning the bar have triggered a family divide.  Maria Menounos is back again to do recon with Jon Taffer, and the bar ends up serving Jon's spies raw hamburger meat.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Los Angeles Brewing Company's name didn't change much as the signs that Bar Rescue put up now say LABREWCO.  They seem to be going by LA Brew Co, but still have a Los Angeles Brewing Company website and Facebook page.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Los Angeles Brewing Company/LA Brew Co. since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "This place has so much potential, it is pretty spacious, but needs more attention from the owner. The ladies bathroom was nice but dirty. There are dead spaces throughout the place with stuff mounted on each other. The drapery needs cleaning or updating..  More attention to small details will make such a big difference to the ambiance.. Overall I had a great time. I will try Saturday night again.. You should too!!"

Negative Reviews:
  • "Place is super weak. Cool atmosphere but beer selection is wack. Went there and all the local beers were gone. LA brewery company with no LA brews???? Doesn't make sense to me either lol."
  • " Lures you in with the promise of 15% off, good food and great ambience, then you get there and find out they lied about the discount, food is typical bar food, and it's empty for the most part or too damn loud to hear yourself think when its busy....You know the bathrooms are bad when your own shoes don't even want to flush the toilet."
  • "Even after gaining unwanted fame on a bar rescue reality show, this bar falls short of everything. Menu, drink selection, staff and ambience belong in the confederate south. Its only a matter of time that rent and hipster reviews will give this bar a proper burial."
  • "Bartenders were on the super-slow clueless tip. Not really sure what was up with them. They ignored half the bar customers waiting for drinks, not realizing who had been waiting and who just got there. Poor bartending IMO. C'mon now!"
  • "This is the worst bar ever...The food sucks, the service sucks and the beer sucks. So disappointing."
  • "We came here because of the name, thinking about BEER, well we were very disappointed they only have one of their own on tab, they won't take the 15% coupon that yelp offers, and on top of that any other craft beer is double the price!!! This is the first time I have ever paid 8 -9 dollars for a local beer!! They don't have a menu for drinks, so if you are concerned about the bill, I'll suggest you ask for prices before ordering."
  • "I don't know if they're terribly understaffed, lazy, or just horrible at what they do, but the service was painfully slow, if they acknowledge you at all."
  • " the worst part was, even though they listed about a ton of beers on draft, each one my husband asked for was unavailable.  it got to the point that my husband just asked, "why don't you just tell me what you do have?"
  • "Tons of beers on tap, every one I wanted was OUT. Had to ask for napkins and silverware, then the waiter just brought one roll up! The beer list consisted of a sloppily hand written, unorganized, no prices listed jumble on an envelope!!...Not wasting my time or money coming back here that's for sure!"
  • "Two letters for the new LABC....BS. Food, service, atmosphere have all taken a dive. Don't bother trying to redeem 15% off by checking in as the new managers will not honor it. BOYCOTT!!!..Never coming here again"
  • "First off, how are you a beer bar and don't have a flippin beer menu?...The wings sucked ass. Seriously?! How do you serve BLEEDING CHICKEN WINGS!!!! Yep, never the hell coming here again!! I advise you to stay the hell away!!!"
  • "Oh, the most disappointing thing is their "Check-in and receive 15% off". You can't. Reason? They're actually not "LA Brewing Company" but "LA Brew Co" so the check-in offer doesn't work since it's a "different" company at the same address."

Conclusion:

This is probably the most negatively reviewed bar I have seen after a Bar Rescue makeover and there are a ton of negative 1-star reviews.  Some of the complaints include terrible service, terrible food, and being out of a lot of beers on tap.  The bar also seemed to be doing a bait and switch with offering a 15% off deal on Yelp, then not honoring it because they changed names from Los Angeles Brewing Company to LA Brew Co., which angered a lot of people.

There also seems to be some things that do not add up with the owner.  He supposedly drives a Bentley, owns another company, and filed for bankruptcy with another company in 2011.  I am not sure how you can start two new companies and supposedly drive a Bentley after filing for bankruptcy, but I guess there is a way.

Bar Rescue's Piratz Tavern (Corporate Bar & Grill) To Close

$

Photo - Spike TV
Piratz Tavern in Silver Spring, Maryland, which was featured on the second season of Bar Rescue has announced that they will close on April 4th due to the bar losing their lease.  Tracy, the owner of the bar, posted the following message on the "The Soul of Piratz Tavern" Facebook group.

"It is with a heavy heart that I have to deliver the sad news that Piratz Tavern has lost it's lease. Our last night will be April 4th. I am trying to keep this information within the family as we really don't want to deal with anymore bullshit from the reality TV world. Thanks to all who worked and played so hard to make the last eight years so great. The memories will last forever!"
The Piratz Tavern episode of Bar Rescue is one of the show's most popular and controversial episodes.   Jon Taffer got rid of the pirate theme at the bar and renamed it Corporate Bar & Grill.  This upset the owners and regulars who wanted to keep the pirate theme, and quickly after Jon Taffer left, they removed all of Bar Rescue's changes and reinstalled the pirate theme.  They sold items from the Bar Rescue makeover and supposedly spent $60,000 to get the bar back to the way they wanted it.  Also the self serve draft beer tables didn't have the proper permits, so they were removed.  Piratz Tavern even posted a Youtube video of them burning the Corporate Bar & Grill sign, and as of today, this video has been viewed over 200,000 times.

After the makeover, the owners and customers were publicly critical of Jon Taffer and his concept, and Jon Taffer felt they were more concerned with being pirates rather than making profits.  Also, fans of Bar Rescue flooded the Piratz's Yelp page to give a bunch of 1-star reviews (over 200 of which have been filtered).  A fan of the bar reached out to Jon Taffer on Facebook about this, and Jon Taffer actually responded to a fan saying he wanted his fans to be civil but also that the pirates brought this upon themselves with the way they acted.

One of the most common questions I get asked is "Is Piratz still open?," and the answer to that question will soon be 'No'.  If you want to get your pirate fix before they close, you have a little over a week to do so.  When they close on April 4th, the bar will be updated as 'Closed' on the Bar Rescue Update Page.

UPDATE - After everyone found out about the closure, Piratz Tavern posted the following on their Facebook page:
"Hear Ye, Hear Ye! Piratz Tavern will open it's doors for the last time on Saturday April 4th. Unfortunately the negative publicity, constant prank calls, vandalism and bogus reviews generated by our unfortunate participation on Bar Rescue have taken their toll. To add insult to injury, late last year Taffer's crew reached out to me again asking that we participate in a back to the bar episode. They promised that it would be followed by a re-rescue and that they would right all the wrong's committed during the first episode. Obviously I don't learn. I believed them. On December 1st we went to the effort to open on a Monday, the one day a week we have been closed for 8 years, with a skeleton staff of former employees who agreed to play the parts. It was basically coerced and staged to be an opening act for a re-rescue. I was told to bring in several changes of clothes to make it appear that filming covered several days. As usual they brought in a bunch of extras to fill the house and we were told what to say and with whom to speak. Throughout the entire shoot the director coached Juciano to curse and say negative things about John Taffer. He referred to me as the "hero", my daughter as the "victim" and Juciano as the "villan". Total bullshit frown emoticon Basically we have been fucked by reality TV again and with know one to blame but ourselves, we have decided not to renew our lease. Just can't take anymore. Director James Agiesta sweet talked me into the deal and then left us behind like carnage, just like the first time. A HUGE thanks to all of you who worked and played so hard to make Piratz Tavern the awesome place it has been for the last 8 years."
So, the bar will be on an upcoming episode of Bar Rescue and they appear to be saying everything was faked in hopes of another makeover.  I guess we will see when that airs...

Here is a preview of the "Back To The Bar" episode that will air on Sunday, April 5th and the clip features Piratz Tavern (video after the break):

Bar Rescue - Patriot House (The Holding Company) Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in San Francisco, California to try to rescue The Holding Company.  The Holding Company has been in San Francisco for about 40 years and was recently bought by four Irish sisters.  Their bickering is supposedly causing the bar to go downhill and The Holding Company is supposedly losing $6,000 a month with a total debt of $600,000.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, The Holding Company was renamed to the Patriot House.  The have kept the name of the bar and still go by Patriot House.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for the Patriot House since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "Came in here last Friday to watch some March Madness. New owners must be doing something right the place was packed. Thankfully they had a TV outside on the patio. Score!...Service was swift and food was good...Bottom line is that the grub hit the spot, folks are super friendly and prices are decent for FiDi."
  • "I hadn't been here in a while, and now i've been twice in the past week.  I love the subtle but definite new changes. The place has life in it again!.... it felt like they kept the charm, and warmth of the old fashioned feel, but just gave the menu, service, and ambience a much needed update!"
  • "We had a corporate dinner and I have to say I was completely impressed.  From the very attentive service (from cocktails all the way through the end) to the food.  Everything was spot on."
  • "Great food, great service and a new look! Patriot House is a staple for Happy Hour in FiDi. Great for any game or a bite to eat!"
  • "The new Patriot House is great for watching sports! We came here to watch a Warriors game, and the place was packed. We still got a seat, they have tvs everywhere in the bar and restaurant so you can sit pretty much anywhere."
  • "Great food great service and atmosphere! So busy for happy hour and big parties! Def stop by for a tasty cocktail if your in the FiDi"

Negative Reviews:
  • "Well Bar Rescue, you have managed to mess up yet another decent bar. Patriot House, formerly known as Holding Company, is a sad excuse for a bar in the Financial District. A patriot house theme is probably the worst theme you could pick for this neighborhood - the FiDi is swarming with young professionals...First off, WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU TAKE FLAT SCREENS OUT OF A BAR?!..Second, bring back the old menu with the old recipes..Third, seriously get rid of that UGLY 1776 sign... Fourth, if you are going to remodel, for god's sake at least change the faulty lighting in the corner by the bar....Sixth, get rid of those stupid barrel tables. Have you tried sitting at them?"
  • "I wish I could give this place a zero star review. They charge $10 for a shot of Jameson here. Bar Rescue was not enough. They also charged me and my colleagues full price for beers during happy hour"

  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in January of 2015.

  • Marissa Browne also owns another bar in San Francisco called the Napper Tandy, which seems to be popular and has good reviews. (Link)
  • Here are the Facebook pages of the sisters Marissa, Danielle, Leona, and Natalie
  • Many people commenting on the articles about the makeover seem to thing the Patriot House theme is strange for San Francisco and that it belongs somewhere like Boston or the East Coast and not in San Francisco.

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name of the Patriot House and has been getting mostly positive reviews.  People like the food, service, and atmosphere and multiple reviews said the place was packed.  There was a negative review complaining about no TVs, but it appears all of the TVs are back as other people say it is a great place to watch sports.  Also, some people think the Patriot House theme is confusing for San Francisco and belongs on the East Coast.

The reviews of The Holding Company were not bad before Bar Rescue came and it ran successfully for 40 years before the sisters bought it.  With Bar Rescue contacting many bars in San Francisco to be on the show, who knows if The Holding Company was actually struggling.  Also Marissa Browne owns another bar (which seems to be successful), and the Patriot House recently gave away a $1,000 tab as a prize which doesn't indicate a lot of struggle.

Bar Rescue - The 38th Floor (Mandala Lounge) Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in San Mateo, California to try to rescue Mandala Lounge.  The bar is owned by Greg Hawkins and he is a self-proclaimed "nightlife expert" who has a large ego.  He also supposedly thinks that women don't belong behind his bar.  Mandala Lounge started to go downhill when the economy went downhill and they went from doing $60,000 in sales a month to $24,000 a month.  The bar is supposedly losing $5,000 a month and is months from closing.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Mandala Lounge was renamed to 38th Floor. The bar is supposed to make you feel like you are in a high rise despite being on the ground floor. The bar has kept the name and concept and they still go by 38th Floor.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for 38th Floor since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "Bar Rescue in the house! The old Mandala wasn't bad, but Bar Rescue really elevated this place into a swanky upscale lounge without being to pretentious. Major improvements were made in the back patio area where there's more lighting, new furniture, and awesome heat lamps"
  • "This place is clean, comfy and the outdoor area offers more room if you feel cramped by the inside...
  • We sat at the bar and were greeted by the owner himself who made our drinks efficiently and offered some suggestions. We mentioned the show and he was open to talking about it. He's a chill guy and I'm glad we had the chance to meet him."
  • "Excellent drinks! Owner is great! Awesome decor and back patio!"
  • "The bartenders are so nice and actually remember our names we've been there 4 times since they've reopened after the bar rescue. The high rise Collins with muddled raspberries is ammmmazing! They always have good djs too!"
  • "Friendly staff on Friday night..Cute patio for summer hangout or drinks with the girls. I was shocked it was empty after the remodel I expected more patrons."
  • "The renovations have drawn some crowds...usually empty mandala transformed to a packed 38th floor bar...well-dressed hip bartender mixing out drinks...music blasting and a lively crowd...still not overly crowded and able to walk around easily...order of few drinks and not bad...nice bar, but will it endure the location?."

Negative Reviews:
  • "I like this place,  service is always excellent- but the space is just kinda awkward... the music is hit and miss- cool patio. I hope they make it."

  • On the 38th Floor website, owner Greg wrote the following message:
  • "The 38th Floor Bar, formally Mandala Lounge, is the creation of Jon Taffer from the hit TV series Bar Rescue. Mandala Lounge opened in June 2007. The location was picked primarily for its outside patio and its proximity to the future Bay Meadows development just blocks from the lounge. Business was excellent in the beginning until the financial collapse of 2008. The general economic conditions coupled with the development freeze of the Bay Meadows hit the lounge hard.
Although Mandala Lounge was committed to service, as was evidenced by their positive Yelp reviews, the business struggled financially. The struggle to stay open was detrimental to my physical wellbeing, the health of my marriage, and my finances, and the wellbeing of my staff. The pressure and stress of a failing business translated negatively through me to my staff and, ultimately, to my customers. Finally, I could no longer justify the negative cost of staying in business and prepared to sell or close.
In the first quarter of 2014 as we were preparing to close, Bar Rescue was canvasing the area looking for candidates for the show. They left us a message, I responded, and we passed through 5 interviews over 9 months. We essentially staid open to see if we would be selected. After months of waiting and anticipation, Mandala Lounge was selected to be on Bar Rescue.
The Transformation was dramatic…for myself (the owner), my family, my staff, and the venue. Jon Taffer, the host of Bar Rescue, essentially put me through “personality boot camp,” helping me realize the defects of character that were blocking me from success. The confrontation of the issues contributing to the bar’s demise set the ground work for a new beginning. Not many people get a second chance and I will forever be grateful to Jon Taffer and the Bar Rescue Team for this opportunity.
We continue to add, improve, and polish the 38TH Floor Bar platform Jon Taffer gave us. We welcome everyone to come experience the accessible sophistication of the 38TH Floor Bar. We don’t get to be here without you so we look forward to meeting you and making new friends. Elevate your night life experience at the 38TH Floor Bar tonight!"
  • There were 238 Yelp reviews (4-star average) of the bar according to this link, but apparently they were all scrubbed after the name change.
  • Here is the owner Greg's Facebook page.
  • Here is a recent post from Greg saying the Bar Rescue makeover is great and thanking Jon Taffer, Bar Rescue, and the new customers.
  • Greg went to Jon Taffer's Nightclub & Bar Convention in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. (Link)
  • A bar back from the bar replied to someone who asked if the show was real and said, "I didn't have a script, my boss didn't have a script and John Taffer didn't have a script. My bar was failing and now it's not. That's the best I can tell you."
  • The bar was looking to hire female bartenders after Bar Rescue came, and it appears they did as there is a female (Stephanie) who currently works there.
  • Greg was interviewed about the Bar Rescue experience recently by a local newspaper, and is quoted as saying, "The process was really really hard, it was very emotional. My wife was on the show, my dad was on the show, my son was on the show. But this guy (Taffer), what they did for us, was unbelievable. They legitimately created some real family healing. … That aspect of it I didn’t really anticipate and it was a wild experience. It was really cool they did a terrific job with the bar. The bar looks amazing, ever since the show we’ve been non-stop improving it and investing into it."
    • He also said that he has dropped his lazy ways, hired a new staff and an experienced manager, and continues to invest in improvements.
    • He said Jon Taffer pointed out that he was the problem and put him through a personality boot camp to help turn him around.
    • Greg said that business is up 30 percent after the makeover, and before the episode has even aired.

Conclusion:

38th Floor has kept the name and concept installed by Bar Rescue and the reviews of the bar have pretty much all been positive (although they didn't seem too bad before the makeover).  Greg seems very appreciative that Bar Rescue came and helped his bar and credits them for turning things around.  He even went to the Nightclub & Bar Show in Las Vegas that is run by Jon Taffer.

They have also hired a female bartender to work at the bar and business is supposedly up 30 percent since the Bar Rescue makeover.

Bar Rescue's Sorties Tavern Is For Sale

Sorties Tavern in Bellevue, Nebraska, which was featured on Bar Rescue in March of 2014 is listed for sale.  The bar has been for sale for quite some time and the asking price is currently $199,500.  A recent ad on Craigslist states:
"Have you always wanted to own a bar?

Here is a great opportunity to own a beautiful bar that has been in business since 1977.

Own a newly remodeled Award Winning bar with profits today. This is a turn key business with loyal customers. This bar is making great profits. More profits to be made if new owner opens the grill. Brand new Kitchen is in place ready to go for new buyer to serve food.

Have financial's to show profits. Buyer must apply for your own Liquor License and Seller will not finance. Buyer must have own financing. Will suggest financial institution.

Owner wants to sell for Medical reasons but will hand it down to children if seller does not get the right price. We will look at all REASONABLE offers."

The original asking price was $210,000 and listings to sell the business say "As Seen on Spike TV's Bar Rescue: Sorties Tavern for sale in Bellevue, NE."  Those listings also say $160,000 of new kitchen equipment (most likely provided by Bar Rescue, which they do not use) and $20,000 in inventory is included.

I am not sure what the "medical reasons" are, but with three owners at the bar, you would think if someone had medical problems, the other two would take over.  This sounds like they just want out of the business.  Also, two of the owners were recently at the Nightclub & Bar Convention in Las Vegas with Jon Taffer, so they do keep in touch.  Sorties Tavern will also be featured on a "Back to the Bar"Bar Rescue episode that will probably air next season.

The bar remains open as they try to sell, but this will be one to keep an eye on.

Osteria Calabria (Plush) From Bar Rescue Has Closed

Osteria Calabria in Glennside, PA (formerly known as Plush Nightspot and eventually renamed to The O.C Bar & Bistro) closed on May 3rd, 2015.  The bar appeared on Bar Rescue in November of 2014, and they posted the following message on Facebook:
"It's the final countdown!! (insert keyboard). It is with both a heavy heart and wide eyed enthusiasm that we bid you all farewell. I want to thank EVERYONE..Friends, family, staff and guests for truly making a dream come true. Our doors at Plush close for good tonight but a new beginning is in the works. There are no words to express my gratitude. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We hope to be open in our new location by the end of summer. Its been a wild ride!! Stay tuned for updates...
TTFN."

Philly.com reports that they closed due to the building being sold and not due to bad business.  The bar is apparently looking for another location to reopen the bar.

The O.C. Bar & Bistro has been in business for 12 years, and it is the first bar from its season of Bar Rescue to close.  You may remember from the original update that they removed a lot of the changes installed by Bar Rescue such as covering the mural, replacing the sign and changing the name.  The Bar Rescue Update Page has been updated to show this bar as 'Closed.

The Shot Exchange in Santa Clarita, California which was featured on season 3 of Bar Rescue has been sold.  The bar appeared on Bar Rescue in April of 2014 and was renamed from The Tailgate to The Shot Exchange.  The owners that appeared on Bar Rescue said their last day as owners was March 14, 2015.

The bar posted the following message on their Facebook Page in March:
"ATTENTION FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CUSTOMERS.........Please come join Mike and I for our last night at The Shot Exchange this Saturday, March 14, 2015, before we exchange hands with the new owner. We would like to THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for all your support and patronage during our ten years as co-owners of The Tailgate now doing business as The Shot Exchange. Throughout the years we have made many great friends and will cherish all the great memories created in our establishment. In addition, we would like to Thank all of our employees from the bottom of our hearts for their loyalty and hard work. As many of you know, Mike and I have our careers, we both coach, and have large families with enough kids for everyone, ha ha, and feel that it is time to concentrate our time and effort with them as they are growing quickly. We hope to see you Saturday, and, again, Thank You, for supporting us throughout all the years. And PLEASE as a new small business owner in Santa Clarita, please welcome and patronize the new owner as he is very excited and motivated. Finally, Mike and I would also like to wish him much success.

See you Saturday, Love, Diane, Mike, Pops and the entire Miller family."

This bar has now been marked as 'Sold' on the Bar Rescue Update Page.  No word if everyone's favorite bouncer is still at the bar.

Bar Rescue's Blue Frog's Local 22 In Danger Of Closing Due To Scaffolding

$

Photo - Spike TV
Blue Frog's Local 22 in Chicago, Illinois, which was featured on the first season of Bar Rescue, has filed a lawsuit saying scaffolding outside of the entrance to their bar is killing their business.  The lawsuit is against the upstairs condominium owners who are having work done on the building's windows.

According to an article on DNAInfo, the bar said it is losing $5,000 to $7,000 per week due to the scaffolding, which is preventing the bar from opening its sidewalk patio.  That figure does not include the expected losses from the patio being closed during the summer months, which are the busiest.  In a CBS local article, co-owner John Reed said the work is impacting his business "to the tune of 200-something thousand dollars."

Owner John Reed was given short notice when work would begin, and he tried to get work to start on the other side of the building first so they could keep the patio open and it would have less impact on Blue Frog's summer business.  He tried to block the construction via a court order last month, but was denied.

The owner has said that sales have constantly been improving since being on Bar Rescue, and they were excited about this year.  Also, the recent Yelp reviews have been mostly positive.  Now, due to the scaffolding, all their reserve funds have been tapped and they have considered asking friends for money to stay open through the summer.

On the bar's Facebook page, they recently posted, "This is serious. Help us out if you can. We are doing everything we can to stay open but could use any support we can get. Stop by for a drink if you can, every little bit helps."

Owner John Reed was quoted in the DNAInfo article as saying, "We're gonna make payroll this week, and if we have a halfway decent next two weeks we'll be able to do payroll again.  We just want to get through this."

I will keep you updated with this situation if anything happens with the court case or if there is any change in status for the bar.

New episodes of Bar Rescue will begin Sunday, June 21st on Spike TV.  There will be ten new episodes and this will still be considered the fourth season of the show.  The episodes will feature bars in San Francisco, CA, Reno, NV, Portland, OR, and San Diego, CA.

The first new episode will be at Park 77 in San Francisco, CA where the bar is being run into the ground by an immature family member.  The preview video of the episode is below and there is a couch in the bar that a porno was supposedly filmed on.  If anyone has proof of this couch being in a porno, send it to me for the episode update.

Bar Rescue - The Lister (Park 77) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in San Francisco, California to try to rescue Park 77.  The bar is co-owned by two brothers Tano and Wayne and two of Wayne's sons Tommy and Angelo.  Angelo is a manager and his actions and decisions have been negatively impacting the bar and the bar is supposedly $188,000 in debt.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Park 77 was renamed to The Lister and it seems they have kept the name. Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Lister since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "If you ever are looking for cheap drinks and a great time you should definitely check out the Lister Bar! It's the only bar around with a hookah lounge and lots of college students come through since it's right next to SF State. This is my stop whenever I come up to the city now!"

Negative Reviews:
  • "It's okay. I don't understand this whole "Bar Rescue". I liked Park 77 before. This bar tries to be fancy but fails big time. The only thing that is saving it is the price of the drinks. The new pictures are creepy. I miss the old pin up girls. They are better to look at than someone's face in memes."
  • "Walking in, nothing really caught my eye. There seemed to be a few more tables to sit at (sadly the beer pong tables were gone) and some new (kinda creepy) artwork on the wall but other than that nothing really different from when I was there pre-remodel. I sat at the bar and asked the bartender for a grasshopper (I was feeling adventurous but couldn't locate any "signature cocktail" or even a drink menu). I was told that he didn't know the recipe but would look it up and see if he had the ingredients"
  • "The space seems cleaner, and I like the seating arrangement, but that's where the positive review ends.  The bartender didn't know the name of the wine she served me (isn't it on the label?).  And despite there being several TVs (all tuned to sporting events), the bartender would not turn off the lame music videos that were on the large screen and turn on the volume for the game (was told it was bar policy to only turn on the volume for games during playoffs).  Finally, there are creepy photo shopped versions of famous paintings and pictures all over the place with a guy in glasses inserted where the original subject would be.  What!!!"
  • "This is by far the worst experience I have ever had with bar service.  The bartender was to drunk to remember a simple order, she forgot what she was doing a few times.  Took forever to get a drink even with just a few people at the bar.  And when I tried to close my tab I had to wait for about 15 minutes at an empty bar."
  • "Wow this is the worst bar expirience I have had that didn't involve a toothless man trying to give me a life lesson. So there is no beer/cocktail list, and the taps aren't labeled. The bartenders are uneducated in beer styles and cocktails."
  • "Filled with cigarette smoke, 30 beers on tap but no tap handles or list. I know they just remodeled so I will forgive them on the beer list, but priority one should have been getting rid of the cigarette smoke inside the bar."

  • Here are the most recent Yelp reviews if you want to look at more.  It seems they are offering hookah now.

The Porno - I am sure this is why a lot of people are here, so it gets its own section.
  • Jon Taffer said he was able to Google it and find it in 30 seconds, but I highly doubt that.  It wasn't quite that easy to find.
  • Yes, there was a porno shot there.  Here is a Facebook Event for the porn shoot, which was December 20, 2012.  A post on the event page had more details such as the site being called Public Disgrace and that everyone there had to sign waiver.  Also, you can see who attended the event.
  • Here is a 42-second preview video of the porno shot in Park 77 with pictures as well from the Public Disgrace website (Obviously NSFW).  Notice at the end of the video it says production date is 12-20-2012, which matches up with the Facebook event.
  • Here is a longer video (NSFW) of the porno, and you will see not only was it filmed on the couch, but also in the bathroom and on the bar.
  • Here is another 4 minute video (NSFW) of the porno.  In this one you can see Angelo behind the bar in a black and white checkered shirt.
  •  Finally another 2 minute video (NSFW) with Angelo reaching out to touch the porn star at about the 1 minute mark (pictured below).

Conclusion:

The reviews of The Lister have been overwhelmingly negative since the Bar Rescue makeover with complaints about the service, the new pictures on the wall, and the lack of a beer/drink menu.  They also haven't been active on social media and are failing to promote their bar.  According to some Yelp reviews, it seems the bar will be offering hookah very soon.

Bar Rescue - Oak Tavern (The Bullpen at Aspen Glen) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Sparks, Nevada to try to rescue The Bullpen at Aspen Glen.  The bar is owned by former major league pitcher Danny Serafini.  After his career was over and he went through all of his baseball earnings, he borrowed money from his parents to open a bar.  The bar was supposedly doing $45,000 to $50,000 a month in sales, but has gone downhill and is $300,000 in debt.  A lot of the issues at the bar are due to an out of control staff that drinks and parties on the job.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, The Bullpen was renamed to Oak Tavern and it seems they have kept the new name. Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Oak Tavern since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Positive Reviews:
  • "The food and drink menu were perfect....My husband had the vic vegas burger and a beer on tap. The price was right and we left feeling completely satisfied! We will definitely be back!! Also the bartender was very friendly and easy to talk to."
  • "First off, the place looks alot better than before. The bar rescue thing seemed to really help, although the place still reeks of smoke and is not well lit. The burgers they serve are awesome, probably one of the best burgers in reno or sparks...They do not allow smoking inside up until 8pm. Definitely will be back. Lunch special from 12 to 3 is 20 percent off the burgers. If you were here before when it was the bullpen, it has totally changed for the good. Give them a try"
  • "We had a blast!! Most bars in reno dont have great tasting, unique cocktails, oak tavern had this amazing "Smoke" cocktail that I must have had 4 of! Coming from San Francisco, where we're spoiled with really great mixologists at every bar, we were so excited to find a place with delicious drinks, and really nice staff. Would recommend to anyone in the area or traveling to!"
  • "The new food and cocktail created by Bar Rescue are fantastic. I especially like the new burgers mixed with pork....We are non smoker and this bar is a smoking bar but no one can smoke until after 8pm when everyone has already eaten....To accommodate  all the customers the owners and Bar Rescue installed state of art smoke eaters. The smoke eaters really do the trick...I would highly recommend this local bar and restaurant."

Negative Reviews:
  • "I'm only rating the as a one star because of the staff..... We were so disappointed...... The ambiance of the bar was nice but that's where it ends... We ordered drinks and food..... Our drinks arrived quick.... The food not so much...... My husband ordered a burger and requested it medium... I ordered a cold chicken sandwich...... We waited over 30 minutes for our dinner... My husbands burger was from a frozen patty and was beyond well done! Needless to say we won't be back!!!! Our waitress was good and that's why I feel it was worth 1 star without her it would be worth zero stars!!!!"
  • "Since the makeover not much has changed when it comes to the clientile and the customer service.  The inside is much improved with wooden accents and an open feel that makes you want to stay awhile.  Other than that it still has the same Smokey dive bar feel as before the renovation."

Conclusion:

The reviews for Oak Tavern have been mostly positive with people complementing the food and the cocktails.  It seems like the smokiness inside the bar was an issue that was addressed by changing rules to not allow smoking during the day and by installing smoke eaters in the bar.  The bar has kept the Oak Tavern name and seem to be very happy with the Bar Rescue makeover.
