Bar Rescue - Money Bar (Murphy's Law) Update

$
0
0
On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Reno, Nevada to try to rescue Murphy's Law.  The owner Gary is a former pilot and opened the bar with his former girlfriend Maria and friend "Nelly" in 2011.  Gary and Maria each own 40% of the bar while Nelly owns the remaining 20% despite Maria not putting any money into the business.  Gary is losing about $2,000 a month and is supposedly only "4 months away from losing everything."

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Murphy's Law was renamed to Money Bar.  It seems that the bar has went back to their old name and still goes by Murphy's Law.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Murphy's Law since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Reviews:

There are only 2 reviews of the bar since the makeover (from Yelp):
  • "Had to check the place out after the remodel. They did a really great job, the place looks awesome!! Problem was I ordered a beer it was not cold so I asked for a White Russian, not too obscure the bartender said it'll be a minute, walked to the other side of the bar and was clearly googling the recipe. Not a problem but still got the liquors wrong.... The menu was printed in bold on a sheet of white paper. Guess that's why there was only one other person there :( place looks great hope they learn to chill a beer or make a drink soon!!"

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in March of 2015.
  • Here are 2 preview videos from the Spike TV website - Video 1 Intro, Video 2
  • Here is the Money Bar website set up by Bar Rescue, which is just a menu.
  • It appears they have re-installed their Murphy's Law signs and still go by Murphy's Law (Link 1, Link 2).
  • Here is the Murphy's Law Facebook Page.
  • Here is the Money Bar Facebook Page, which doesn't have much activity since they went back to being Murphy's Law.
  • Here are the Facebook Pages of Gary (Owner), Maria (Owner), Wendy (bartender)
  • Judging by Maria's posts, such as this one in reference to the changing back to Murphy's Law,  she is still at the bar.
  • In season 2 of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer renamed JA Murphy's to Murphy's Law.  This Murphy's Law had no relation to the bar from season 2 (which is closed).

Conclusion:

There wasn't too much information on this bar, but it appears despite Bar Rescue changing the name from Murphy's Law to Money Bar, they have decided to go by their old name of Murphy's Law.  There weren't many reviews of the bar, but a review complained about the bartenders and stated that there was only one other person there.  As the bar has went back to their old name, it appears they didn't keep too many of the changes made by Bar Rescue.  It also appears that Maria is still involved with the bar.

Bar Rescue - Over Easy Bar & Breakfast (Six Point Inn) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Portland, Oregon to try to rescue Six Point Inn.  The bar was once making $30,000 a month, but owner Oleg focused on opening other businesses, which put his inexperienced step-daughter Sunny in control of the bar.  They are now supposedly $1 million in debt and Oleg and Sunny need help with both their bar and their relationship.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Six Point Inn renamed to Over Easy Bar.  It appears the bar has kept the name given to them by Bar Rescue.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Over Easy Bar & Breakfast since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar:

Reviews:
  • "The bar has recently been remodeled and looks great. Tasty food with descent prices. The bloody marys are made from scratch and are very good. Breakfast served all day which is yummy. Our waitress was very friendly. Definitely go back again!"
  • "Restaurants without windows have always been a big turn off for me.  So we had never been inside.  As we began to see improvements to the outside, new name and sign stating they had great breakfast, we decided to give it a try.    It's very nice and clean on the inside.   My husband's chicken fried steak was delicious.   My 2 egg breakfast was great.    The service was friendly.    We are going back to try happy hour next.       My only complaints would be that the back door off the kitchen was propped wide open and had no screen that would keep flies from coming in.  It's also unpleasant to pull up to a place to see staff standing only a few feet from that back door, smoking."
  • "Don't let Anna make drinks for you buy beer! For the love off god drink beer she can't screw that up!"

  • Here is a blog post from someone who was at the grand opening which has a few pictures.
  • Here is the Facebook page of Sunny *says Olya, but I am pretty sure it's her and Sal (cook).
  • Over Easy Bar is having a watch party which says"Sal takes on Chef Pink."  Also, during the makeover Sal posted a photo of two biscuits that said, "Can you pick which biscuit is from Chef Pink from Bar Rescue.."  which basically made fun of Chef Pink's biscuit for not rising as much as his.

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name and changes installed by Bar Rescue and still goes by the name of Over Easy Bar & Breakfast.  The few reviews about the bar were mainly positive, despite one complaint about a bartender.  The reviews before the makeover were also pretty positive.

Bar Rescue - Menara (The Palace Lounge) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Upland, California to try to rescue The Palace Lounge.  The Palace Lounge is a Moroccan bar that seems to have an identity crisis and problems with authenticity.  Jon Taffer has brought in actors from Spike TV's mini-series Tut to help him do recon on the bar.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, The Palace Lounge was renamed to Menara, however it appears the bar has gone back to its old name of The Palace.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Palace since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Positive Reviews:
  • "Food was delicious! Customer Service was great! (We were the only diners on a Tuesday afternoon) had the place all to ourselves! Oh, and the Hookah!!!
Will definitely be back on a Saturday night for the music and live entertainment!"
  • "Awesome restaurant. Great food, great people who really support the local community and culture."
  • "This an amazing place the owner hosted an organization I'm a participant in this evening with such extensive hospitality and warmth. It was a beautiful event and i know his business will thrive as a result of his wonderful treatment toward the community."
  • "Didn't even know this place was here but I'm definitely coming back food was delicious and the service was all around great. Hooka here is a must and you can sit and enjoy each others company while listening to great music outside in the patio area.."
  • "This place is awesome. The food is delicious! Beef kabob, kibeh, salad and the rice were amazing.  The drinks were good and the servoce was 5 stars. The waitress was super nice and the owner is super kind too."
  • "I was there last Saturday and I enjoyed the singer and the belly dancers. Great mediterranean food and brilliant customer service. This place has Reasonable prices and I highly recommend every one to go there."

Negative Reviews:
  • "Very friendly, but unorganized service. We asked for hot tea multiple times before serving ourself. Also, we waited well over 45 minutes between appetizers and dinner. The only reason why they get 3 stars and not less is because their kubba came out hot and steamy. Labne was great, hummus, baba ghanosh and tabboola all needed salt and lemon. I don't think will ever return."
  • "I went to this lounge on a Saturday afternoon for an event. I only ordered a couple drinks, which were good, but the service was bad. I had to flag down a waitress to order a drink on several occasions. Also, first they gave us free water when we arrived to the lounge but when we asked for more (after paying for drinks) we were told we had to buy a water bottle for $3. I have no problem paying for water, I just do not like the lack of consistency."

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in March 2015.
  • Here are two preview videos of the episode from the Spike TV website - Video 1, Video 2.  It seems they are using Bar Rescue to cross promote Spike's new miniseries Tut.  The actors of the miniseries do the recon in the episode and Bar Rescue even got moved to 8pm for this week as Tut premieres at 9pm.
  • Here is The Palace Facebook Page. The cover photo has a mention of Menara Bar, but the page still goes by The Palace.  All recent bar flyers have no mention of Menara and only say The Palace.
  • Their Facebook page posts are mostly in Arabic and there are a lot of videos that show pretty large crowds before and after the makeover.
  • Here is the Menara website set up by Bar Rescue.
  • The Palace Lounge website is still under construction and is not up-to-date.
  • Here are more reviews of The Palace Lounge from before Bar Rescue, and it seems like the reviews were pretty good before the makeover as well.
  • They still have the belly dancers with the LED lights after the makeover - Here is a video from April with the dancers and the LED lights.
  • The bar still has The Palace signs outside as well as the Menara sign installed by Bar Rescue (Link).

Conclusion:

It seems like The Palace Lounge has kept their old name and does not go by Menara.  The reviews both before and after the Bar Rescue makeover are mostly positive with people liking the food and the atmosphere.

Perhaps a Moroccan bar was chosen so Spike could do some cross-promotion for their mini-series Tut.  They even moved Bar Rescue from its normal time slot for this week's episode.  Next week Bar Rescue will be back at its normal 9pm time slot.

Bar Rescue - Panic Room Bar (Tonic Lounge) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Portland, Oregon to try to rescue Tonic Lounge.  The Tonic Lounge is a failing music venue that has ants and bugs all over the kitchen when Bar Rescue visits.  Jon Taffer needs to motivate the inattentive owner of the bar in hopes of turning it around.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Tonic Lounge was renamed to Panic Room Bar and it appears the bar has kept their new name.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Panic Room Bar since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • No recent reviews of Panic Room on review sites.

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in April 2015
  • Here is a preview video of the episode from the Spike TV website that shows bugs all over the place in the kitchen.
  • Here is the Panic Room Facebook Page
  • Here is the Panic Room website.
  • The Facebook pages of most of the people on the show are tagged in this post.
  • A review of the bar after the makeover called the Panic Room sign "the worst in Portland."  Also revealed in that review were things such as:
    • The new paint inside the bar was already peeling
    • The aging sound system was left alone and not improved by Bar Rescue
    • The lighting stack installed by Bar Rescue is actually on a four-month lease and will be repoed after the show airs.
  • There are over 60 comments on that article discussing the makeover and many agree about the bad sign.  Joe Gallagher from the Panic Room responded to the review with a comment supporting the show, stating, "Jon Taffer and his team were actually very cool and did a great job with the facelift of the bar. The new look is a starting point that we at panic room will build from. Your article smacks of eliteism and the too cool for school attitude that Portland sometimes has for everything in it. Don't like the new look and feel of Panic Room, fine, but don't be so scared of change. How about some positives as well. The underground music that is booked at the venue and the local bands that play those shows will likely gain greater exposure now. Cheers- Joe - Panic Room"
  • The Panic Room thanked Bar Rescue for the makeover and advice right after the makeover, and there were a lot of negative comments about the name change and sign.   The bar also said they are still going to be known for their live music and nothing changed with that.
  • A Reddit thread after the makeover also has locals complaining about the new name and sign.  A more recent Reddit thread has locals complaining about the makeover as well.
  • The Panic Room sign was recently vandalized to make it read "Penis Room."  (Pictured below) - It has since been fixed.

Conclusion:

The Panic Room has kept the name given to them by Bar Rescue and are happy with the changes and the advice given by Bar Rescue.  The local Portland community seems to be very critical of it though and does not like the new name or sign.  It seems like despite the new bar name, people think the new bar is pretty much the same due to the fact that not much was changed inside and they still offer live music.  It is interesting that an article said the lighting system is on a lease and will be removed after the episode airs.

Bar Rescue - Pacific Coast Wine Bar (Brix Sunset Beach) Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Sunset Beach, California to try to rescue Brix Sunset Beach. Brix Sunset Beach is a wine bar with an eccentric owner Rick Reich, who is too busy being the life of the party to notice his business is failing.  During the recon, the spies get him to open multiple bottles of wine to sample without buying any, which probably cost Rick hundreds of dollars.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Brix Sunset Beach was renamed to Pacific Coast Wine Bar, however the bar has already gone back to its old name of Brix Sunset Beach.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Brix Sunset Beach since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • "Found this on Yelp and we are not disappointed. It was over and beyond the recommendations we read. Ambiance is fine but food is incredible. Pastrami lives up to its reputation, garlic fries are incredible and Bratwurst on homemade pretzel bun was to die for. This will become a regular spot for us!"
  • " The service was slow, but the food was ok.  My take is that the restaurant was understaffed.  It was fairly busy and the help as well as the owner seemed stressed."
  • "We love the great choice of beers on tap and they have a hugh selection of wines.  The food is really good we have never had anything that we didn't like.  The owner and staff are very friendly it is a great place to go."
  • "Overall, it is a decent to good place that could be great.  Tons of beer, more wine than you can shake a stick at, live music, some pretty solid pub grub and some characters in their clientele and their staff that are fun to people watch"
  • "I had a burger and it was decent. I asked for gluten free bun and they were out, offered g-f bagel instead!  The house Cabernet was basically vinegar...undrinkable. Service was ok, but they just seem like they aren't geared up to make decent dishes."
  • "So here's the issue; the service still sucks. As hard as they tried to be nice and attentive, it took far too long to deliver. All signs point to the kitchen. Even the flat bread took 30 minutes which I do blame the server. The table next to us were told the bar had been sold and it was the new owners who contacted Bar Rescue for the free makeover. Rick will still be around but from the sound of his own e-mail, he's leaving the day-to-day operations to other people."
  • "Bar Rescue just swept this place about a week or 2 ago, so you'd think there's some improvement.   The problem isn't the decor, it's the service and obviously the TV show had no effect on that.  We sat down at the bar.  Nobody really welcomed us, told us any recommendations, or made any attempt at conversing with us"

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in late May/Early June 2015
  • Here is a preview video of the episode from the Spike TV website.  Maria Menounos is back to help with recon.
  • Here is the Brix Sunset Beach website and their Facebook Page, which is up-to-date.
  • Here is Rick's (Owner) Facebook page.  Most of the people from the show are tagged in this album.
  • The Brix actually has two locations, one in Sunset Beach, which was on the show, and another in Long Beach, CA called Brix At The Shore.
  • The bar has a 4-star rating on Yelp with over 300 reviews (Link).
  • A recent OC Register article talked to owner Rick Reich from the show.  Some of the things revealed:
    • Rick said he knew it was Maria Menounos who was with Bar Rescue, which is why he was giving her the samples.
    • About three weeks after the makeover Rick removed the Pacific Coast Wine Bar signs and put up new Brix signs.  He also brought back the sandwich board boasting the best pastrami.
    • Rick believes Bar Rescue didn't do their homework and didn't understand his clientele.  About 65 percent of his business was from beer drinkers, and he was losing them with the name change.
    • Rick admits with his second location, he hasn't been paying as much attention to this location and business was down 35 percent.  He also said he learned a lot from Jon Taffer and that "he knows his stuff."
  • In another article, Rick said, "Beer people don't want any part of the wine people and vice versa. There's a distinct cult that grows there. So we changed it back."  He also said he has brought in new management and that the bar looks great now.
  • One of the Yelp reviews above said the place was sold and the new owners contacted Bar Rescue, but nothing from the recent interviews seems to indicate that.

Conclusion:

Pacific Coast Wine Bar has gone back to their old name of Brix Sunset Beach.  The reviews before the makeover were mostly positive, but Rick said business had gone down since he opened a second location.  The reviews post-Bar Rescue makeover are also mostly positive, but there are still some complaints about the service at Bix Sunset Beach.  The bar has also brought in new management.

Man Fatally Stabbed Outside Bar Rescue's Racks Billiards & Bourbon

A man was fatally stabbed outside Racks Billiards & Bourbon in Corona, California late on Sunday night.  Police were called to the bar for a reported stabbing, and when they arrived they found a man with a non-threatening stab wound.  That man was taken to the hospital and while the police were investigating the scene, they found another stabbing victim who was already dead when police discovered him.  Police did arrest a suspect and took him into custody for questioning (Link).

Racks Billiards & Bourbon was featured on season 1 of Bar Rescue and before Jon Taffer changed the name, it was called Angel's Sports Bar.  It was the first episode ever to air of Bar Rescue.

This is the third murder to happen at a bar affiliated with Spike's Bar Rescue. In November 2013, a man was fatally shot outside of Second Base Bar & Grill from season 2.  Also, the bar owner of Pit and Barrell murdered a man inside of the bar a few days before the episode was supposed to air on Spike.  Spike TV meant to remove the episode from airing, but mistakenly aired an encore.

There have also been shootings outside of Taza Nightclub in Omaha and So Yo Craft Bar in Yonkers (just happened last week), so be careful out there.

Bar Rescue - BR Steak (Pro's Sports Bar) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Country Club Hills, Illinois to try to rescue Pro's Sports Bar & Grill.  The bar is just outside of Chicago and has a management heavy staff that disrespects its owner.  Jon Taffer brought in Dan aka Big Cat from Barstool Sports to help him with the recon of this bar, and the drink he was made during recon had about 7 ounces of liquor.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Pro's Sports Bar & Grill was renamed to BR Steak and they have kept the new name of the bar.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for BR Steak since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • "Service was bad......I just waited for 25 minutes for a drink and still didn't receive it. The waitress and several other employees passed me by.....so I won't be going back"
  • "The first rule of a steakhouse is make sure that if nothing else is perfect, the steaks are.  Somehow, I think that rule escapes the chef here...The food:  the steak was seasoned well and the salad was okay. ..The bad:Atmosphere:  this place is small,  so there is no reason to have the music so loud that it is distorted coming from the speakers....Food:  How does a steakhouse not get steak temps right?  I'll tell you. Thin steaks. Mid-rare steaks will continue cooking well past the intended temp when they are resting when they are thin...There are a LOT of issues, including the bathrooms which were in such a state of disrepair that I felt dirtier leaving the bathroom than I did entering it....No second chances for this place unless there are drastic changes."
  • "Beware this is not a restaurant, it's a bar lounge that serves food, and I didn't see one steak every one was eating fried chicken! We bought a groupon to eat here and when we arrived they asked for ID I'm thinking you need ID to enter a steakhouse? Once we entered you have to seat yourself the place was filled with an older crowd 50yrs and up. Every one was dancing to old school music and there were limited tables to sit at."
  • "When the bar MANAGER serves you a drink in a PLASTIC wine glass, can't pronounce Cabernet Sauvignon, and then tells you they're out, you should be forewarned...I agree with other reviews...BR can't do BOTH and do it WELL!  Focus on being a full service premier BAR with experienced staff and forget the restaurant and catering. I guess you have to know how to STEP YOUR GAME UP in order to accomplish it...they need serious help. It's true...first impressions are EVERYTHING!"

  • Dan is also known as Big Cat on Barstool Sports, but Dave is a buddy of Dan who doesn't work for Barstool Sports.  Dan said Jon Taffer was confused and assumed he worked for Barstool Sports (another tweet).
  •  Big Cat will be live tweeting this episode of Bar Rescue, so we will see he reveals anything about the episode while it is airing (Link).

Conclusion:

The bar has kept all of the changes installed by Bar Rescue including the name and seem happy with the makeover.  The makeover happened all the way back in October 2014, and there haven't been too many reviews of the bar since then.  The reviews are mixed with people saying it is more of a lounge than a steakhouse, and people aren't impressed with the food.  It seems like the bar has not capitalized on the publicity that Bar Rescue usually brings and does not even have an up-to-date Facebook page almost a year after the makeover.

Ele Lounge From Bar Rescue Has Closed

Ele Lounge in Hollywood, Florida, which was featured on Bar Rescue in March 2015 has closed.  A reader that is local to the area let me know that it was closed and provided pictures of what the building currently looks like.

Here is the bar right after the makeover from the Bar Rescue makeover:

There was no official announcement of the closure, so I am not sure what happened, but if I get more information, this post will be updated.  People were posting current pictures to the Ele Lounge Facebook page in early August, but it appears sometime after August 3rd, 2015 that the bar closed.

The bar kept the name and changes provided by Bar Rescue, but also hired back someone who was fired on the show and the bartenders continued to dance for tips (as stated in the original update).  This bar closed just 5 months after being on the show and less than a year after their makeover (Nov. 2014).  The Bar Rescue Update page has been updated to show this bar as 'Closed.'

Bar Rescue - The Study Lounge (Myerz Pourhouse) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in El Cajon, California to try to rescue Myerz Pourhouse.  The bar is just outside of San Diego and is supposedly haunted and struggling.  Jon Taffer brought in two podcasters this week to help with the recon of this bar.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Myerz Pourhouse was renamed to The Study Lounge and they have kept the new name of the bar.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Study Lounge since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • "I've been coming here for about a year now and even before the bar rescue the atmosphere and staff are always great; very friendly and service always on point...This is a great local bar I'd recommend it to anyone."
  •  "Small little bar,I like to go in the mornings since I work night shift and the people are always friendly as well as the the staff. Cute blond girl bartender has been there my last 5 trips and always has a great attitude and does a great job."
  • "The Study Lounge has a good vibe, a cool jukebox, nice tall boy tables/stools and a totally new look that our group likes. Pool tables are totally updated."
  • "You can put lipstick on a pig..... This is the same old Pour House, just with books on the wall. We walked in on a Saturday evening and the place was about half full of elderly people and bikers. Not exactly the clientele that the theme suggested."
  • "First of all, there is not another bar within a 2-mile radius of here, so even before "Bar Rescue" showed up this place was usually relatively busy at all hours. Second, this area of El Cajon is mostly populated by rednecks, cowboys, and desert rats, and the overwhelming drinks of choice are beers and shots....I used to go to the Pour House once a week or so, but now this place is too dark, pretentious and expensive. I'll find another local watering hole without the library vibe."
  • "Can't wait to see the episode of Bar Rescue this place was featured in, so I can see the logic that John Taffer used when coming up with the new name and theme of this bar.  I live pretty close to this bar and I grew up in El Cajon and the new theme seems more suited for a college town bar than a blue collar location."

  • On the Facebook Page of The Study Lounge, they seem happy with the makeover and right after the makeover said, "Yup, it really happened!!! Not going to change a thing. If I do, it won't be until they play the Episode at least."
  • Most of the people appearing on the show are tagged in this Facebook post if you are interested in them.
  • Here are the old Myers Pourhouse reviews and the old KC's Cocktails reviews which all seem to say they are a dive bar with cheap beers.
  • I couldn't find anything online about the bar being haunted or a ghost being there, so I'm not sure if that was just for the show or if it is only known by employees.

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name of The Study Lounge and said they would keep it at least until after Bar Rescue aired.  The reviews since the makeover are mixed with some people saying the concept of The Study Lounge doesn't fit with the area and the clientele.  Also there isn't really anything online that says the bar is haunted.

Bar Rescue - Back To The Bar Delusional Owners Updates

$

Photo - Spike
Tonight on Bar Rescue is a Bar To The Bar special that will visit Taza Nightclub, Headhunters, Dimples, and 22 Klicks.  The special is revisiting "delusional owners" and here is a preview of the episode.  Below are links of updates for each of the bars appearing on the show if you are interested in more details than what is on the show.

Taza Nightclub - Here is the detailed update for Taza and after the show the bar had issues with their liquor license as they needed to have hookah for the license.  Also,  they had their liquor license under review due to a fight and there was also a shooting that occurred outside of the bar.   I would expect this one to be a failure on the show.

Headhunters/Metal & Lace - Headhunters closed in April of 2014, so not sure why they tried to go back to the bar so long after they closed. This will definitely be a failure on the show.

Dimples - Dimples closed in April of this year, and it was torn down to build condos and a Whole Foods.  I would expect this one to be a failure as it is closed, but we shall see.

22 Klicks - There is no detailed update on this bar, but the reviews have been pretty good.  Also, owner Todd Harr was at this years Nightclub & Bar Convention (Link) with Jon Taffer, so expect this one to be a success.  A lot of the 'Back to The Bar' successes have appeared at Jon Taffer's Nightclub & Bar Convention (Sorties, Moonrunners, Spirits on Bourbon, 22 Klicks) , so I would say Bar Rescue knows they are a success or not before they send in spies.  This one will probably be a success on the show.

Bar Rescue - La Luz Ultra Lounge (Club Caribe) Update

$

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Bonita, California to try to rescue Club Caribe.  The bar is owned by a womanizing owner and his enraged wife actually shows up during the episode to serve him divorce papers.  The bar is also filthy and there are more bugs found in their liquor bottles than any other bar that has been on Bar Rescue.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Club Caribe was renamed to La Luz Ultra Lounge and they have kept the new name of the bar.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for La Luz Ultra Lounge since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • "This place is ridiculously unorganized. Claiming to be an "18 & up club" , . We payed VIP ,unaware that "VIP" means being stuck behind a black rope in the back . Because we aren't all 21 we don't have access to hang out in the areas that our 21 year old friends are in. Small venue , lame service. Nice sound systems , seems like a cool place if you're 21."
  • "Management is garbage. I agree with most bad reviews from experience. For a place located all the way out here...better off at a place with better reviews and closer to other options when service is bad. Owner is a true amature in customer service and ive seen his ghetto class in action with other  customers."
  • "Formerly known as Club Caribe, La Luz Ultra Lounge is the worst "nightclub" I've ever experienced. I brought my girlfriend here for her birthday, 20 dollar cover charge to see Meek Mill. 40 dollars for both to get in, and by 2 a.m., guess who never showed up? My shots of "Patron" were watered down tequila out of a patron bottle.....I spent 90 dollars and for one reason, to write this review and hope nobody goes here again. Everyone is deceiving. From the disgusting owner that lied to me when I had called before I went to the bartender and security. And can I mention the owner promised me the cover charge was 10 dollars? I hope this place burns down."

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in May 2015.
  • Here are two preview videos of the episode from the Spike TV website.
  • Here is the La Luz Ultra Lounge Facebook page, and here is another Facebook page for La Luz Ultra Lounge. Both are kept up-to-date.
  • Here is the old Caribe Night Club website, which has a link to redirect you to La Luz Ultra Lounge website.  They are only open 2 nights a week, but serve lunch during the week.  Their hours are Tuesday - Friday 11AM - 2PM and Friday - Saturday 7PM - 3AM.  They have dance lessons at the bar on Wednesday nights too.
  • Here is the owner Juan's Facebook Page which has a lot of La Luz advertisements.
  • Here are some pictures of the interior posted by Juan after the makeover.
  • Juan posted a preview video of the episode on his Facebook page, and someone commented, "Not real right? Because I know both of you and you love each other."  Both Juan and his wife liked that comment.
  • Here are more reviews of Club Caribe before the makeover, which a lot complain about customer service, management, and the cover charge.
  • La Luz Ultra Lounge had a restaurant inspection in July 2015, in which there were a few minor violations found (one being "Vermin" - which could mean bugs) and they currently have an A rating. (Link)
  • Christina is no longer at the bar due to her moving to New Jersey. (Link)  Most of the employees from the episode are tagged in that post if you are interested.
  • There was a homicide outside of the bar in 2010 according to this article.  The article also states the parking lot was usually littered with condoms the morning after "ladies night" at the bar and that there are often late night arguments and altercations.

Conclusion:

La Luz Ultra Lounge has kept the name given to them by Bar Rescue and seem pleased with the changes.  The few reviews since the makeover are not too good with the complaints being about service, management, and the cover charge.  Juan and his wife are still married, so some of the divorce drama could have been for the show.  Christina is no longer at the bar as she moved to New Jersey.

Bar Rescue - Way Point Saloon (Molly Malone's) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Ramona, California to try to rescue Molly Malone's.  The bar is supposedly losing $6,000 a month.  During the recon, the bartenders are bickering and the owner Bob does nothing about it.  Bob's fiance is also contemplating leaving him due to the failing bar.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Molly Malone's was renamed to Way Point Saloon.  They seem to have kept the name, but still use both names to refer to their bar.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Way Point Saloon/Molly Malone's since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • "Free pool on Sunday's should be free pool on both tables. I don't get it, they're actually loosing business because of this decision...I have witnessed people leave and have done so myself because of this! Since the beverage prices are so high you would think the second table being open wouldn't hurt the business. I'm not taking it out on any of the staff, they're are always friendly and professional....It's management that should look into this a little more! That's all for my rant now!!"
  • "Formally known as Molly Malones, and recently bar rescued. The place did need a make over and a new fresh look. They succeeded there, but with a little constructive criticism the place will be pretty awesome. The prices for drinks are still a bit high so if you recently got a raise or a bonus at work you can afford it"
  • "people here don't take kindly to strangers... went looking for something to do one evening, ended up being chased out by the douchebag "regulars." even bought one guy a beer, only to be turned on later for "talking like a fag." apparently i was using a lot of big words they didn't understand. nothing poor to say about the service & the staff, but the rednecks do keep a tight lid on it, so don't go in w/ any fancy vocabulary because they don't take kindly to strangers who "talk good"
  • "First time we have been here. We were greeted by a friendly bar lady called Tara   Tara told us that there is a choice of 23 beers including my two favourites Guiness and Bud!  Great service!  Cold bud draft and wifi!  My husband and I ordered the club sandwich to share.  Quick service with the sandwich and lots of it!  One huge plus is lovely clean restrooms - both boys and girls!  Lots of parking outside too!  In my eyes lots going for this bar - call in!  Highly recommended!"
  • "They have live music at this joint which makes it instantly cool. It is the busier of the bars in Ramona and a cute place at that. Good space inside. Pool. A smoking area for the cancer stick suckers and they even serve pretty good food. I like this joint. People are friendly. The place is clean. They have drink specials and a dance floor."

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in April 2015
  • Here is a preview video of the episode from the Spike TV website.
  • Here is the Molly Malone's website.  The domain name is still mollymalones.org, and the description of the bar says Molly's/Way Point Saloon.
  • Here is a Way Point Saloon Facebook page that hasn't been updated since May.
  • Here is a Molly Malone's Facebook page, which is kept up-to-date.  The bar post pictures and events and tags the Way Point Saloon in these.  However the page name still says Molly Malone's and recent posts still refer to the bar as Molly Malone's, such as this recent one from September.  Despite this, it appears they still use both of the bar names and they haven't abandoned the Way Point Saloon name.  Here is also the business version of the same Facebook page.
  • If you are interested in the Facebook pages of the employees from the show, they are tagged in pretty much every post on the Molly Malone's page.
  • A restaurant called Up The Hill Grill is right next to Waypoint Saloon and serves food to Waypoint Saloon according to their website.  The Yelp reviews of Up The Hill Grill are very good and it just opened last year.
  • The food inspections have been good with an A grade, and the Food Facility is labeled as "Molly Malone's/Up The Hill Grill/Way Point Saloon." So it appears it is the same owner for the restaurant and Way Point Saloon/Molly Malone's.

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name Way Point Saloon, although they still refer to themselves as Molly Malone's on Facebook, their website, and in some advertisements.   The reviews of Way Point Saloon are mixed with people complementing the bartenders and the interior, but complaining about high prices.  The restaurant Up The Hill Grill next to Waypoint Saloon(which serves their food) has the same owners appears to be pretty successful according to the Yelp reviews, and it just opened last year.

Bar Rescue - The Royal Oaks Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Youngstown, Ohio to try to rescue The Royal Oaks bar.  The bar is the oldest bar in Youngstown and also doubles as a BBQ joint.  The owners are two feuding brothers who are driving away customers with their obnoxious behavior.  This obnoxious behavior also gets Jon Taffer pretty heated when he confronts them.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, they decided to keep the name the same and it still goes by The Royal Oaks.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Royal Oaks since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:

  • "Fall off the bone ribs! Amazing BBQ flavor with a hint of raspberry! I couldn't finish the full rack at lunch, and have been snacking on my leftovers for the past two days. I killed the coleslaw at lunch and keep wishing I had some leftover slaw to go with my cold ribs! Yummmmm!!!!!"
  • " It has been run by the Kennedy brothers since 2000, and recievef a complete interior makeover by the docureality show team of "Bar Rescue", so it reflects the period style of the post prohibition era of the 1930s.
  • "No establishment has such a diverse and eclectic patronage, and best ribs in Youngstown with their signature raspberry barbecue sauce, prepared to perfection on Tuesday and Saturday nights.  Nobody is a stranger at the Oaks."

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in August 2015.
  • Here is a preview video of the episode from the Spike TV website.
  • Here is The Royal Oaks Facebook page which is kept up-to-date.
  • Here are more reviews before the Bar Rescue makeover, which are all pretty positive and many people complementing the ribs and raspberry bbq sauce.
  • Here is a 7-minute interview with owners John and Lou talking about how they decided to buy the bar and they also talk about the bar history and the food.
  • A local website Vindy.com had a lot of articles regarding the Bar Rescue makeover and there were a lot of comments on those articles.  A lot of people commented about the bar being on the east side of Youngstown in a bad part of town.  Also there being a lot of regulars that go to the bar, the food is good, and the bathrooms are pretty bad.  People also say the makeover wasn't too drastic and it just cleaned up the place a lot.
  • The address of Royal Oaks was apparently sold in 1997 for $40,000 and in 2009 for $25,000 (Link).

Conclusion:

The reviews both before and after the Bar Rescue makeover are pretty positive with people liking the atmosphere and the food such as the ribs and the raspberry BBQ sauce.  It seems like the bar is in the east side of Youngstown, which apparently has a high crime rate, but it still seems like there are a lot of blue-collar regulars to keep the place going.  The Bar Rescue makeover should help bring in some new customers and keep the old ones as well as not much has changed besides upgrading the bar.

Bar Rescue - The Federal (Martini Brothers) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are once again in Youngstown, Ohio to try to rescue Martini Brothers.  The owners clash with their landlord and partner who would rather paint fruit than save their failing bar.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Martini Brothers was renamed to The Federal.  They have kept the new bar name and still go by The Federal.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Federal since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • "Food is delicious but the service is terrible. The server was very slow and inattentive."
  • "Absolutely horrible!  Chicken was dry and tough and the burger had absolutely no flavor. I never would've known that Bar Rescue was there!"
  • "Recently this place was on Spike TV's Bar Rescue. They used to be known as Martini Bros. My wife and I stopped in to watch College Football on a Saturday. We sat at the bar and ordered burgers and fried shrimp for an appetizer. They had a few seasonal craft brews on tap and a few more in bottles. Overall a good beer selection. Our food was very good and burgers were cooked properly to order, medium rare came out as expected. Fries are hand cut and I suggest adding garlic and parmesan, they were very good. Really loved the fried shrimp. Portion size was also good. Service was good. Nothing bad, but our bar tender had trouble hearing us, although she got the order correct. They kept our glasses full, and when we were ready to go they were prompt with the bill. Two burgers, an app, and four beers ran us 61 dollars including a 20% tip. Overall, good experience, I'll be back again."
  • "Tv show bar rescue did an overhaul on this place! The atmosphere was great, the food was great and so were the drinks!! Staff is friendly and the prices were reasonable! Go check this place out!!"

*Reviews from Yelp, Tripadvisor

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in August 2015.
  • Here is a preview video of the episode from the Spike TV website.
  • Here is The Federal Facebook Page which is kept up-to-date.
  • Here is a website for The Federal and here is a link to their menu.
  • There is a watch party for the episode at the bar tonight, and in the event, it states - "Ok, all that can be said, is that we are all in for a wild ride. And remember its only tv. In reality there have never been any mistakes, flaws, business or personality failures of any of the ownership, management, or staff of the Federal, Martini Brothers, Lemon Grove or any of their subsidiaries. Party Starts at 9pm. Episode at 10pm. Public Shaming 11pm"
  • The Yelp reviews before the makeover were pretty positive with a lot of complements on the burgers.
  • People in this Reddit thread say the place was always crowded on weekends and the burgers were very good.
  • Someone appearing on the show as a critic said Bar Rescue goes to the bar a few weeks before filming to find try the whole menu and find the weakest items.  They then get people to order those items for the show. (Link)
  • In local articles, it says the bar is owned by Jacob Harver and Dan Martini (Link).  Also Jacob is the owner of the building (Link).  So I am not sure if the 46% vs. 8% ownership stake is just for the show or if it is the actual breakdown.
  • Shortly after the Bar Rescue filming, owner Dan Martini was arrested for his part in a $2 million dollar Ebay sports memorabilia fraud.  Investigators say it is the biggest case of domestic fraud in the history of Ebay and the sports memorabilia had forged autographs and forged certificates of authenticity.  Dan cooperated with the investigation and plead guilty to money laundering and sentencing has not happened yet, but probation was recommended. (Link)  He allowed the ring master to use his account for the transactions. (Link)

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name of The Federal and the reviews since the makeover are mostly positive.  It seems like this bar wasn't in need of a rescue from the Yelp reviews before the makeover and the comment from the bar's watch party saying there weren't any issues with the bar.  The publicity from the show should help The Federal, although the negative publicity of Dan Martini being involved in a large fraud scheme may hurt business.

Bar Rescue - Tim Owens' Traveler's Tavern (Rippers Rock House) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Akron, Ohio to try to rescue Rippers Rock House.  The bar is also a live music venue that is owned by former Judas Priest front man Tim "Ripper" Owens.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Rippers Rock House was renamed to Tim Owens' Traveler's Tavern, and they have kept the new bar name.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Tim Owens' Traveler's Tavern since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • "We stopped in here to check the place out. The only reason I'm giving this place two stars is because our waitress was really fun and sweet. We had wings. They were bland to say the least. We tried five different flavors. Worst wings we ever had. The band was pretty good."
  • "I went here cause I heard it was on Bar Rescue and thought that was awesome! The place had an awesome interior and the sound was great! I went on karaoke night and I'm sure Jon taffer set them up with an great sound system cause everyone sounded so good! Our waitress was super nice and friendly! Only thing I didn't like was the cocktails, so freaking strong, my drink just tasted like vodka and ice, so gross! Also someone had puked right on the floor at the bar by our table and that was not okay especially after we had just got our food brought to us."
  • "Ive only been able to go one time but it was very good the wings are the best the people are very friendly and there are always fun events going on....I gave a 4 star instead of a 5 star because I feel they should open to more groups of people not just the rock and heavey metal music open for all kinds of music itll pull in more business. ..."
  • "My first Bar Rescue bar! Now Tim Owens' Travelers' Tavern. The food was awesome and the new drinks were good. The staff was awesome, especially Diane thank you for taking such good care of us!"
  • "Went for dinner for the first time since the bar rescue. Got the boneless garlic parm wings dry rub. The wings had no flavor at all and the waiter told me that's what you get with boneless wings.   I guess I'll try something different next time.  It's decorated kinda dark but it is a bar so that's to be expected I guess."

  • Owner Micah also owns a landscaping company called Impact Landscaping. (Link
  • Here are the Facebook pages of Micah and Tim
  • In a local article during the makeover, Tim was quoted saying, "In this day and age, even being open for two years is good.  But we’ve never made any money. We’re gradually losing money, and people don’t see that. If people see one show going on, or a show on the weekend, they think, ‘You guys are doing really good.’ But they forget what happens Sunday to Thursday."
  • Owner Micah posted on his Facebook page during the makeover that Jon Taffer "started his bar career managing rock venues and is a huge fan of Ripper." (Link)
  • According to this article, Micah owns 60% and Tim owns 40%
  • Tim is currently on tour in South America and the tour had 20 different dates scheduled (Link).
  • A local article after the makeover said Bar Rescue tried to get rid of the impression everyone had that this was a metal bar.  They also said Bar Rescue complemented the service and food and only made a few tweaks to their popular wings.  The show also implemented a new cocktail menu. Co-owner Micah also said everyone on the crew was so nice.

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name of Tim Owens' Traveler's Tavern, and the reviews of the bar since the Bar Rescue visit have been mixed.  Despite the bar focusing on wings, the reviews of the wings seem mixed with some people complementing them, while other people complaining about them.  With Micah having a landscaping business and Tim still touring, it seems like this bar could be a hobby for both of them, but it doesn't mean that they aren't losing money on it.

Bar Rescue - Off Base Bar (The Filling Station) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in San Diego, California to try to rescue The Filling Station.  The bar is a struggling military bar, and owner Sissy doesn't trust her employees.  During recon, the bartenders sneak into the bathroom to take shots and one drunk bartender is dancing on the bar and gets hit by a ceiling fan.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, The Filling Station was renamed to Off Base Bar, and they have kept the new bar name.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Off Base Bar since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Positive Reviews:
  • "I have occasionally been coming in after work for some shots and the prices are good, but I recently ordered food during lunch and it is on point!!!! Great sandwiches and the Parmesan Fires are to die for!!!"
  • "All I got to say is what a difference some paint makes. I use to frequent this establishment way way back when it was the filling station pub. And a place where... well let's not dig in the past. Good job off base bar. It was a very pleasant  time. A good experience all around. Food was top notch. Love the pop corn on the tables. Yum. I love popcorn. The service was some of the best service I have had in that place. EVER!! And I work in the industry.  Once again I enjoyed every aspect of the off base bar. Bravo."
  • "Cool place. Karaoke is fun and music is on par. Good Drink specials and great crowd. Food is pretty good too. Bartenders are pretty awesome. We'll be back for sure."
  • "Recently got remodled by bar rescue and its alot nicer inside now. Is a dive bar and i dont expect much from it besides being a place to sing karaoke and drink kots of beer. Since the remodel the food has become top notch. Ted does an awesome in the kitchen. They havethere own signature cocktails now designed by one of the professional bartenders from bar rescue. The karaoke company does a good job, they have tons of songs and a few of them are great singers. Everyone here is basically a regular and were all friends. Me nd my roommate come here almost everynight to sing....The bartenders are awesome. Alot of my favroite ones are gone now but the ones there are still great. Sometimes theyll give you free shots of something they just whipped up as an experiment. Good friends with security also. The owner is detestable though so i avoid her."

Negative Reviews:
  • "Ok place. Came to do karaoke with friends and we found that it stopped at 11:30. Lame. There was only about 30-40 people in the bar all night, super dark, and the jukebox kicked the bucket and stopped playing. No dance floor for the music so we sat and twiddled our thumbs until a pool table opened up and we got some enjoyment out of coming down a half hour away from home. Probably won't come back."
  • "Went in the bar tue night, got one beer and they charged my card 79.00 and are refusing to refund it."
  • "Went to get a drink (3 of us)--the bar tender said "sorry I'm leaving soon" and then proceeded to talk to another employee without any service.  After waiting for 15 minutes without service or a drink, we left. While it has a new look to the place--it's the same staff."

  • Here is the Off Base Bar website, which has their menu and pictures of the interior.
  • Here is an old Off Base Bar Facebook page, which doesn't have many posts.

  • The bar still has the name The Filling Station on their liquor license, but the current one doesn't expire until 2/2016. (Link)
  • The reviews before the Bar Rescue makeover were pretty bad with people complaining about fights, being overcharged and the atmosphere. (Link)
  • Bartender Anna no longer works at Off Base Bar according to her Facebook page.
  • Sissy Xue also owned another bar in San Diego called Last Day Cocktails (Link).  She owned it at the time of the Bar Rescue filming, but it appears she is no longer an owner as of September 2015.  A Facebook post on Last Day's page in Sept said, "Just sang "Ding Ding, the Witch is Dead". In honor of Sissy. All hail the new owners at Last Day!"
  • If you look at the reviews (regular and filtered) of Last Day Cocktails on Yelp, there are complaints about Sissy saying she gives the wrong change on purpose and substitutes lower quality liquor in drinks.  There are also some compliments for her.
  • Kind of random, but War Machine (MMA Fighter notorious for brutal assault of his porn star girlfriend) was arrested at Last Day Cocktails.  Here is a news story/video about that incident which has testimony from Fuyu Xue.

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name Off Base Bar and the reviews since the Bar Rescue makeover are mixed.  People complemented the atmosphere, the service and even the food, while others had complaints about the service and being overcharged.   The reviews after the Bar Rescue makeover are definitely more positive than before the makeover.

Owner Sissy owned two different bars at the time of the Bar Rescue makeover, but it appears she has gotten rid of the other bar recently.

Bar Rescue - Proving Ground Bar & Grill (The Hooch) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Dearborn Heights, Michigan to try to rescue The Hooch Bar & Grill.  The bar's owner Chandra is foul-mouthed and degrades her bartenders to the point that Jon declares her the most unlikeable person he has seen.  She is also losing about $4,500 a month due to the bar struggling and Jon threatens to not rescue the bar unless Chandra respects her staff.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, The Hooch Bar & Grill was renamed to Proving Ground Bar & Grill, and they have kept the new bar name.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Off Base Bar since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • Great neighborhood sports bar!...We stepped in and instantly felt a comfortable neighborhood bar vibe. Lots of TV's all over to keep on top of your favorite sports teams. The staff was very polite, even the bartenders on the other end of the bar (whose section we didnt sit in) said " Hi"...But my friends and I enjoyed the place so I have no doubt we will be back! Keep up the good work Proving Ground!
  • "Came here on the first night it was open for the bar rescue "relaunch". The drinks are pretty good, although very expensive. I tried the prove it which was like drinking siriacha water. Seriously. Also tried the 6th gear which was STRONG. The gravy and cheese tots are on point though.  3/5 because I can't base my review on a night they SLAMMED the bar for filming. Will return soon to give a better review."
  • "Stopped in for an after dinner drink and to see the remodel after bar rescue. It was a Saturday evening and they weren't busy at all. Which is normally a pretty bad sign...Ordered a vodka soda and a beer. The vodka soda tasted exactly like soda water no vodka at all. Waitress never came back over to see if we needed or wanted another round of drinks. Had to walk up to the bar to get our tab after waiting for over 15 minutes with no new drinks. Rating 2 stars only because it was brighter inside than before and didn't try any of the food items."
  • "So i stopped in on the official first night it was open, and under extreme stress the bartender cyn stepped up to the challenge and made me 3 drinks in a good time facing an extreme challenge, the new interior is top notch, it's a great bar!"

*Reviews from Yelp

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in late August 2015.
  • Here is a preview video of the episode on the Spike TV website.
  • Here is the Proving Ground Bar & Grill Facebook Page, which is kept up-to-date.  They are also having a viewing party tonight for the episode.  Reading through their posts, they seem happy that  Bar Rescue came and are advertising drinks made by Lisa Marie and food by Chef Keith.
  • Here is the Proving Ground website, which is just a menu of drinks and food.
  • Here are some reviews for The Hooch before the makeover which are pretty negative and one speaks of the place becoming like a strip club late at night.  One review speaks of a shot girl making out with multiple guys and three guys sticking their fingers "you know where" in front of everyone. (Link
  • Here is a Hooch Facebook Page where people check in and post pictures.
  • A sign outside the bar says "new staff and new management." (Link

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name Proving Ground Bar & Grill and the reviews of the bar are definitely more positive than before the Bar Rescue makeover.  It seems like Jon Taffer tried to clean the reputation of the bar up, and the bar is following his direction as the stripping has supposedly stopped and they are boasting "new staff and new management."

UPDATE - The bar is deleting some of the negative comments on their Facebook page, which is angering a lot of people.

UPDATE - Cynthia posted on Facebook why she quit. "I quit because Chandra hired a new girl and gave her my best shift without talking to me first. I was the day bartender so to lose a Saturday shift hurt financially. And Amanda is right I hardly go up there anymore because not only am I a mom but I'm a full time college student with a full time job. None of us act like that in real life. Yeah Chandra is a bitch but they amplified everything for good tv. I expected these types of reactions from fans and it's sad you'd base your opinion on a reality tv show"

Bar Rescue - The Arena Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Ann Arbor, Michigan to try to rescue The Arena.  When the bar was doing well, it had revenues of about $150,000 a month.  As new bars opened nearby, the competition caused The Arena to lose customers.  The bar is now supposedly losing $10,000 a month and is supposedly $1 million in debt.

For this episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer decided to keep the name of The Arena.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for The Arena since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Positive Reviews:
  • "Service is always good here, food is decent and drinks are good.  After Bar Rescue came in, they made a few cosmetic changes that I noticed but the rest is similar.  Definitely a place we stop in at when bar hopping in A2."
  • "All of us were From out of town and to be honest everyone was very very friendly. But there were a few things that stood out. One thing was bartenders taking shots of alcohol with customers. Now, in Oregon that's a big no no but not sure the rules in Michigan. I also have to say that there was a huge issue with over serving. There we multiple groups around us who were obviously over intoxicated yet the waitresses continued to serve them because they knew they were racking up a large tab at the end of the night...Overall bathrooms were clean, waitress was nice. And lots of TV's including ones at your table"

Negative Reviews:
  • "Bar rescue or not this place has always been a trashy dump with bad food and drunk servers!"
  • "As another Yelper mentioned, Jon Taffer and his show Bar Rescue killed The Arena. It used to be awesome -- if you were looking for a sports bar with traces of dive bar thrown in. The service was awesome, the drinks were cheap, and the food was pretty good for what you were paying for...Post Jon Taffer: The whole dang inside is painted blue -- removing any of the warm wood tones. They put some brighter bulbs in and strapped some Michigan pictures on the wall and called it a day. Thank you for your wisdom Taffer, you made the Arena the lovechild of a T.G.I.Fridays and a Buffalo Wild Wings in Ann Arbor. We come here regularly for trivia on Thursdays, and as a group of six people, spend two hours knocking back $3 Michigan bottled beer which is a happy hour special. This is apparently something they're not doing anymore. Not only that but there's almost no Michigan beer left in the establishment."
  • "Wow! Knowing the pre-"Bar Rescue" Arena and meeting the post-, I am left scratching my head. What did Jon Taffer exactly do?! Last night, status post Lions home game, the bar was deader than I've ever seen it. "Bar Rescue" successfully made the Arena LESS popular! At least when the Arena was its old self, it seemed to embrace its divey-ness. It was sticky and smelly with over-poured drinks and over-served patrons."
  • "Sure, the bar looks a little cooler with lighted stands for the liquor but all it seems they did was put some UM football pics on the wall. It just looked like a cheap job. The kicker for me was that the hallway to the bathrooms REEKED just like it used to before the remodel...Beer: HOW DO THEY HAVE NO MICHIGAN BEERS ON TAP?! Sure, they have like 10 in bottle, but you're in Ann Arbor filled with bars that serve craft beer on tap! Was not a fan of that at all...Hoped for better after the remodel"

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in September 2015.
  • Here are two preview videos of the episode from the Spike TV website - Video 1, Video 2.
  • Here is The Arena website and here is The Arena Facebook Page.
  • Mike said he was contacted by Bar Rescue saying they were looking for bars for a series of "alumni" shows focusing on campus bars.  He also said he was due for a remodel, so figured it was a good fit. (Link)
  • In the link above, Mike says, "I'm going in with my eyes open.  It's semi-reality TV. People know me. People know this business. If people think I'm a huge asshole; if that's how I'm portrayed in the show, well that will bring people in too. I signed up for it. I've got a thick skin."
  • A local article after the makeover said a lot of the scenes, such as the reveal were shot multiple times.  This is pretty standard, but a lot of the time, it was due to local buses drowning out the sound.   The changes to the bar listed in the article included: "new bar stools, pendant lights and a copper backsplash for the tap handles at the bar, but most of the rest of the changes in the front of the house seemed to center around a new color scheme — maize and blue, of course — and a general decluttering"
  • In another article a month after the makeover, owner Mike said although he was happy with most of the Bar Rescue changes, he isn't keeping them all.  The golf game by the front door was brought back and the sports memorabilia previously on the walls is coming back.  They incorporated some of the kitchen ideas, but pretty much scrapped the drink menu as soon as Bar Rescue left because it didn't fit with the clientele.  Mike said he is glad Bar Rescue came, and traffic has increased due to word of mouth about the makeover.
  • In this video interview about the show, Mike said one of his managers walked off the show during the stress test.
  • In the articles, it seemed like the success of local sports bars in Ann Arbor depended on Michigan's football team being competitive, which they haven't been for the past few years.  This could explain some of the decline of sales.

Conclusion:

The reviews after the Bar Rescue makeover are more negative than positive with people complaining about not much changing besides the paint, and there being no local Michigan beer on tap.   There were also a few comments about the bad smell in the bar still being present even after the Bar Rescue makeover.

Judging from the comments from owner Mike, it seems like he decided to do Bar Rescue for a free makeover.  Mike has brought back some things such as the sports memorabilia, the golf game at the front door, and he has pretty much scrapped the cocktail menu installed by Bar Rescue.

UPDATE - In an article after watching the episode, Mike was interviewed and a few things were revealed:
  • The sequence of his reaction shots were out of order and Mike said this was the reason why he had to wear the same shirt 3 days in a row.  The show makes people wear the same shirts for pretty much all Bar Rescue episodes, so this is common.
  • Bar Rescue got to their "million dollar debt" by asking Mike how much he still owed on cars, houses, vacation houses, the bar building, etc.  He is not behind on any payments and nothing is in jeopardy.
  • Mike said he knows what happens on the show and isn't mad about anything.
  • The first time customers who sent back food repeatedly were actually regulars and were told to send food back by Bar Rescue.
  • Vinny, the manager that walked out during the stress test is back at the bar.

Bar Rescue - Back Beat Piano Bar (Jazz Katz) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Southfield, Michigan to try to rescue Jazz Katz Cafe.  The bar is owned by a former psychologist and her interfering family and lazy staff have caused the bar to fail.  The bar is supposedly losing about $8,000 a month.  During recon, one bartender leaves the bar area to confront a customer and when Jon Taffer intervenes, more drama ensues.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Jazz Katz was renamed to Back Beat Piano Bar, and they have kept the new bar name, but seem to use both.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Back Beat since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Positive Reviews:

  • "Wow! Elegant, the atmosphere is hypnotizing. One of the most upscale professional restaurants I have been to in all of Michigan. The food was amazing and the music was right on point. I can't wait to go back."
  • "My husband and I had a wonderful time lastnight! The music was awesome from the band and singer Sharon Love Jones (amazing voice)! SUPERB treatment by the staff and owners (Tiffany was AWESOME even though she was very busy)! The food was good as well (mac n cheese was very good and everything was fresh and hot when it arrived at our table)! We'll be back soon!"

Negative Reviews:
  • "It was the worse. Waited over an hour for food. Drinks were terrible, even the regular pop was flat. Appetizers came after the food that was under seasoned. On top of everything the service was even worse. We had to beg for the check,, that we should not have had to pay vc the food was bad. The band was not that bad, but o would never go back because of the service. Two thumbs down!"
  • "Eat before you arrive, the food was mediocre at best.  We ordered several dishes and nothing tasted good and the worst was the 26.00 seafood Mac and cheese, a huge mound of Mac and cheese with a few bites of shrimp.  Atmosphere was nice, I'll return BUT dinner will be elsewhere."
  • "Great music, but terrible service. We came with a Groupon that included two drinks with admission. After waiting 10 minutes for the bill, we were charged $10 per drink. This was more than the Groupon itself! I don't think we will he going back. They have a lot of work to do."
  • "I had my 41st Fabulous Birthday party here... Glad everyone had a good time listening to LIVE JAZZ BAND !!! Music was too low they kept adjusting the sound. Drinks were watered down. Food was very small portion but tasty...U have to go yourself to have your own experience."

  • Jazz Katz - BackBeat is offering a Groupon for deals on admission plus 2 or 4 drinks. (Link)
  • According to this online profile, Tamika is also an owner of a restaurant called French Quarter Cafe.

Conclusion:

The bar has kept the name Back Beat Piano Bar, but they seem to use the name interchangeably with Jazz Katz.  The reviews since the Bar Rescue makeover are more negative than positive with people complementing the music, but having complaints about the service, food, and prices.

Bar Rescue - Power Strip (Chix on Dix) Update

On tonight's episode of Bar Rescue, Jon Taffer and crew are in Detroit, Michigan to try to rescue Chix on Dix.  Chix on Dix is a struggling strip club located on Dix Street in Detroit (hence the name).  Jon doesn't usually rescue strip clubs, so he will need to use some different advice to save this bar.  The performers at Chix are unsociable and the poor service is causing the bar to lose about $5,000 a month.

During the Bar Rescue makeover, Chix on Dix was renamed to Power Strip, and they have kept the new bar name.  Let's take a look at some information, reviews, and updates for Power Strip since Bar Rescue came and made all of the changes to the bar (All reviews are post-Bar Rescue):

Reviews:
  • "Really like this club but management does 't seem to keep a dancer on stage and the dancers don't seem to want to talk to customers. I have visited several times early afternoons and management teems preconceived with its own lunch and dancers want to talk to each other. The only person do their job is the bartender, she is veryhot and I would love to vip with her."

Other News and Links:
  • The Bar Rescue makeover happened in late September/early October 2015.
  • Here is a preview video of the episode from the Spike TV website.
  • Here is the Chix on Dix Facebook Page. In all recent posts, they refer to themselves as Power Strip, so they have kept the name.  They also went by the name Industrial Strip starting in April 2015. I am not sure if the show made them go by Chix on Dix when they filmed.
  • Here is a Chix on Dix Facebook Page where people check-in at the club.
  • Here is an Industrial Strip Facebook Page.
  • Finally, here is the Power Strip Facebook Page.
  • It seems like on all of their Facebook pages, there are ads that they are hiring dancers.
  • Here is the Power Strip website set up by Bar Rescue, which is the cocktail and food menu.
  • Darren also lists himself as a General Manager of another bar on his Facebook Page.
  • Here are some Instagram photos tagged with #PowerStrip, and some of the recent ones seem like they could be people from the episode, such as bartender Meshelle (along with computer power strips).

Conclusion:

The bar/strip club has kept the name Power Strip since Bar Rescue did the makeover.  It is hard to determine how it is doing since not many people review strip clubs.  The only review seems to say that the dancers don't seem interested in the customers, which was the case during the episode of Bar Rescue.  Also there are many Facebook pages for the bar/strip club, and they may want to consolidate some of those.
